Reading today's online edition of the news I met the following headline Thailand loses its bid to share the cultural spoils with Cambodia as Unesco lists Preah Vihear a World.... Now was this a Freudian slip, or simply poor English? Surely they did not mean the cultural 'spoils' they meant the cultural 'responsibilities'? Or is this entire argument just over the spoils? The money that can be made from the site and tourism, plus of course the nice grant from UNESCO?

'Cultural Spoils' is the highly inspired literary expression that recalls comprehensive memoir to the readers. SPOILS means, the war trophy acquired by military aggression. Cultural Spoils may tell a tale of a history. Understanding a cultural language needs the knowledges of history, philosophy and general sentiment that prevails a society. In fact, Siam completely conquered weak Kampuchea before it became the colonist French protectorate, and ruled them with strong fists. Siam displaced many of Kampuchean populace into Siamese rice fields during their rule. Upon the military France arrived, there was bloody conflicts to demarcate the boundary between Kampuchea and Siam, again, Laos and Siam. Siam held strong the Kampuchean northern province - Preah Vihear to acquire more Mekhong river basin. Negotiation had resulted Siam retreated over the Kampuchean northern mount watershed, instead Siam took the long littoral zone in the east region (present seashore Trat province). This history remains as a conflict yet in between. As seen the castle sitting on the top of the watershed now matters, and the Trat province has secured more gulf's gas field toward Thailand. This remains a deep remorse to Kampucheans today. Thai poeple may think they were deprived of the castle, first by superpower France, now G7 nations, them members of WHC, who unanimously accredited on the castle and who now keep heavy business entities in Kampuchea. Thai people feel lonesome, like disowned child in street. That is why such hard feeling expression, CULTURAL SPOIL is spoken openly. Civil commotions are expected soon in Thai side.

Ian, I thought 'cultural spoils'= 'cultural ruins'. A place? Now that you have mentioned I become unsure.

Lida, I am frankly unsure, to me the expression'cultural spoils' summons up an image of the Elgin marbles etc. But the word spoils means gains from dubious activities, as in the spoils of war.
