Political Loneliness

Sometimes
life doesn't let us a chance. We can betray our convictions – or we have to stay alone. Are our political convictions worth to go this way? I don't know.

Loneliness is the expression of lacking the community with other individuals. Political loneliness is the consequence of not joining the main stream. Not accepting the presented polarity and floating with the flow.

Do you  have a choice to say 'yes' or 'no' to that?

I think most people are looking for a political 'home'. May be this is one reason why they have so much difficulties to overcome their own opinions. Overcoming the own opinions can make lonely. So,  is it better to stay the old one? Staying party member?

Or do we have to accept it? Do we have to accept the lonely road of the political moderate?

Al, yes a year ago it was different, we still had a red/yellow divide, but because we discussed many other topics we were able to agree in other areas and so this kept the political disagreements more friendly.
It like a bunch of parrots fighting, African greys versus South American Greens. Only these parrots are reds and yellows.
In Orange we have 3 topics areas just for jokes, here the last time I read an intentional joke was two years ago.

Ian, c20
yes, the style here is getting more and more aggressive and boring at the same time. A permanent repetition of the same unchangable opinions. Was it different before? What can be done against this development? Seems nothing... I think you are more and more changing to your other blog. Sad for us staying here.. I think without you things will get worse. May be I will fade away too....

I feel lonely, both the reds and the yellows in these blogs have gone too far, I cannot associate with either viewpoint. A middle ground has vanished from this website, a shame I used to enjoy life here.

Farangs really never concern about Thai politic if it's not their own interest or benefit for being here. Not to complain too but it's the "Fact"

I agree.
Thailand has become a much more difficult country to live in post Thaksin.
He used xenophobia to stir up anti farang sentiments after the collapse of Chavalit's disastrous administration.
Needless to say Thaksin benefited massively from the devaluation of the baht, by having inside information.
He then went on to blame the I.M.F for all the ills in Thailand, in particular the farangs.
Whereas before, as Happyjack has stated elsewhere, renewing an annual visa was a non event, just send your passport with the fee and back it came stamped.
Ian complains about Abhisit not immediately correcting the faults instigated by Thaksin; I can only assume he is a recent resident here. Recent I mean, post Thaksin.
The 90 day rule was never enforced pre Thaksin.
I always reported being as H.J would say P.C, and it took two minutes, and a pleasant chat with the immigration staff.
Compare that to now!
When I first moved to Thailand , I went to the Thai Embassy in London with a letter from my future employer and was instantly given a Business visa; try getting one now!
So whinge on all you Thaksin admirers.
He had the audacity to live in England and Germany!
Thank goodness he is no longer welcome in either of those countries.
Perhaps Al or Ian might like to sponsor him as a political exile.

Thank you , Expresso!
Nice to hear also something positive.

Aphisit - Intelligent? Yes! Character? Not sure...
To be honest I don't know his role in this game: I don't know how much he is depending of other powers (military etc). He seems to me too weak and inconsequent to lead a country in such a problematic situation. Or he has not enough power. Seems: New faces are needed... How can they be found? - Just by an open process involving all parts of the population. Thailand is in need of trustworthy persons. I am sure there are - but at the moement they aren't given a chance. I think Thailand needs an alliance of a constructive and peaceful middle class.

Thanks, expresso. Have a nice day there (in Chicago I think)!

Al, you seem a gentleman to me all this time.

I don't know how your arguments with some blogger/bloggers have arisen. One fact is I don't normally read all the blogs in details after I have assessed and judged what individual bloggers are. Yes, based on character!

Thaksin - Intelligent? Yes. But he used it in a wicked way. Character? Sure, he has character. But my definition of character in a man of his position is to preach morality, responsibility, accountability, and above all put the country first before one's own self-interest. So, in my book, he scored minus infinity!

Aphisit - Intelligent? Yes! Character? Yes! But, at times, lack resoluteness - perhaps it's due to some PC he's learned in Britain that may not be applicable here at the present time.

Hi, expresso,
nice to see you here again.

Sure you are right - I would absolutely agree with you if there would be a way to overcome our problems without politics.

Your last statement
"Today, people are too impressed with politicians' colloquial skills that they forget to look at their characters when they vote!"
is sad but absolutely right!

Yes, intelligence + character would be the best...

Thanks, expresso!

It's never wrong, in the long run for a country, to vote for a politician who is seemingly intelligent and possess good character....Mind you, I'm saying: for a country and not for anyone's immediate needs!

The best is not to talk politics so you will be politically lonely. What's wrong with that?

The way to participate in politics is look at the characters of the politicians. Today, people are too impressed with politicians' colloquial skills that they forget to look at their characters when they vote!

Thanks to your comments! The most can be regarded as constructive....

I see the most don't think that there is such a thing like political loneliness. Iceberg is describing quite well how I am understanding 'political loneliness'. First, just to say it clearly: It has nothing to do with the personal situation if someone - I mean his connections to family and friends. I meant 'political' relations. But political loneliness describes a - I admit - subjective feeling. If someone is aware of that – or not – is dependent of his individual constitution. In many cases it's the feeling of someone standing between the fronts: Usually a silent voice between loud & extreme voices. Why silent? - Because we humans are shouting the louder the more we are believing into our own attitudes. If you're hating the other side – like here so many are hating red shirts than you are loud. You behave like being sick. Some are using an extrem, abusive language. Some are insulting others having another opinion. But if you think that no side is the owner of that what you call 'the truth' - if you are aware of all the doubtful and dangerous simplifications leading to this - then you will become silent. At least a little bit silent. Why? Because you will start to see the a tiny little part of the reality.... you are getting aware of different sides. You're getting aware how stupid a one-sided opinion is. Suddenly you are receiving a glance of the complex reality – and your simple picture starts to crumble down. First a little bit – later more and more. This makes you silent - at least not so loud as those others around you, standing side by side on both sides shouting their hate tirades. It's interesting that Iceberg mentioned the founding fathers of religions - I suppose he was thinking of particularly of Jesus and Buddha. Particularly if I think of Buddha – 'coz you are living in a Buddhist society – he was someone speaking for the 'middle way' in asceticism – but I think this can also seen so in other aspects of life. You know I'm really often surprised how people who've been grown up within a peaceful culture like Buddhism can talk so badly about the other side. Buddha didn't say: You should... He just said: you can – but you MUST bear the consequences. Ok, I really think that, too! AND I HOPE FOR YOU YOU WILL NOT FORGET IT!

But standing between the fronts makes lonely. Not to run with the flock makes lonely. And because we all are humans with the natural wish to have friends - because of this we feel this sometimes. Iceberg feels it. I feel it, too. We both realized that there is so much destruction around us – and seemingly no way out. Look at the proud shouting here, the self-confident proclamation how bad, ignorant, stupid the other side is – and how clever and sophisticated the own position. Have you ever realized how ridiculous this is. I read so much nonsense – distributed with the deepest possible fervor - and most of that remained uncontradicted.

I really cannot imagine how stupid somebody must be to be able to think that YOUR problem of YOUR society and of YOUR future and that of YOUR children can be solved by deepening the gap by suppressing and ignoring the other side and praising the own attitude! Are you unable to realize YOUR contribution in that game????

There have been accusations against me. Words like 'ignorant' and 'stupid' have been used. I am not sure if those are aware of the situation: I am not living in Thailand. I can turn away without any problem. I am not fighting for my future. I am fighting for YOUR chances. Europe and the West are sometimes regarded as decadent. People here are spoiled - I must admit. This was also to a major degree my own opinion – before I met the situation in Thailand. I was thinking that Europe will have many problems surviving in such a dynamic world. But the experiences here are showing me: We (here in Europe or the US) have much better chances than I thought before to overcome problems. We are to a much higher degree what you aren't: flexible, questioning, open-minded and free in our speech. We can look for solutions – and must not wait until they are falling from the blue sky, while many of you stay in the extremist's trap. Have you ever asked yourself why so many 'farangs' have such a critical view on Thailand now? Because they are ignorant or stupid????? ( I feel pity with those believing that.)

But I am NOT HERE TO COMPLAIN. I want to help you. I cannot change the facts. But may be …. there is a tiny little chance to make you think about this or that. May be there is a little chance that those noisy ones of you are becoming a little bit more silent. May be ----- I can help you to become a little bit more lonely (in politics). Yes, it sounds surprising: I want you to become a little bit more lonely.... because this is a sign for ------> BR used the right term! -----> 'FREE THINKERS'.

Iceberg, I was glad that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the firefighters. As I noted before, the Cheif Justice stated that the way to stop discrimination is to stop discrimination.

People usually can (and do) find political bedfellows to hang around with, no matter how nutty their beliefs are.

Alien, Couldn't agree more. Look at nd, even he has a small(and vocal) following here. All the rest of us are ignorant. Sorry pal, but I believe you may fall in the latter category along with many of us. Guess that's the price we pay for even considering ourselves to be "free thinkers".

BTW, How are my Yankees doing?

I feel alone quite often politically.

Seems to me, what happens now, it is either us or them in a political scene. Ideal or opinion presented, if it is not from us, it is all nonsense.

No compromise, no walking in the middle path as we were taught by the founding father and the principle religion of the country. Or is it that it has no meaning anymore and we just using it to serve our purpose, our gathering, and to justify our political agendas.

Destruction to all that don’t agree with us as I have seen it happened in the past 2 and a half years. Yes, I feel alone quite often politically.

So when you put the word, 'Political' in front of 'Lonely', I REALLY don't feel it.
