Standards and guidelines

The Nation's webblog aims to create a community on cyber world where people around the globe can get together anytime around the clock.   In this imagined society, we can enjoy freedom of expression. We are free to exchange views, news, information and knowledge.

However, absolute freedom never exists on earth. It is an obligation of all to minimize limitation of liberty setting common fundamental rules for the game to protect basic right of all members in this community.

We would like all members to be aware of hereby 10 guide lines anytime you enter this society.

 1)      We welcome all intelligent debates and dissents but please bare in mind that whenever you strongly disagree with any bloggers on any particular issues, attack their views not their personality. Character assassination is against a media ethic. We want the blogs to be a community but it is still a community within a media so that media ethic could not be avoided.

2)      As long as we are a site of English language media with international audiences, please keep posting in English. Other natives in voice or audio forms are also welcomed only with English translation or excerpt.

3)      Please be polite. We don't welcome any rude words. All bloggers shall refrain from using "four-letter-words" out of proper context.

4)      Please respect other people's beliefs. You can employ facts, information and reasons to convince the other to agree with you but cannot force people to believe to disbelieve in what you want.

5)      Please do not drag our website into the territory of "hate media". We don't tolerate any forms of hate speech, racism, sexism, fanaticism and any kind of phobia eg. Sino-phobia, Islam-phobia and Thaksino-phobia. Such speeches must be removed immediately we find them.

6)      Cyber world is relatively free and could be accessed beyond boundary but please be notified that the host never escapes from legal arms of its homeland. We reserve the right to remove all posts that may put us in legal difficulty, such as libel and defamation in accordance with Thai laws.

7)      Think twice before publishing any contents as your expressions would last long in our archive and such statements could become references with legal binding.

8)      The blog looks like something personal but actually it is never a personal diary as long as public could see it. Any contents should be relevant and reliable otherwise it could damage our and your own creditability.

9)      The blog is interactive, please do not post and leave. The bloggers are encouraged to return to check reactions from other fellows as your speech might be either misunderstood or misinterpreted.

10)  The Nation is print-based media, please be well informed that we would like to have your sharp, intelligent, insightful posting to be published in our printed outlets.

In most newspapers it is not acceptable other than as a direct quote". For example, the British press reported the deputy PM as having told a reporter to "fu ck off".
Incidentally has anyone ever wondered why such words are usually 4 letter?

I'm curious about guideline #3.
Can someone please tell me what the "proper context" on the Nation Weblog for " 'four-letter-words' " is?
I'm not planning on using any, but I'd still like to know which contexts they are proper to here.

Greg, my thinking is this, probably if I met someone like Dam, xyyz or others face to face, they would be polite and none argumentative, this is the Thai way and culture. So simply getting out and about and meeting people you learn the surface thoughts of Thais.
In a blog a Thai is anonymous and can give free rein to what is often simmering beneath the surface. Thus I find that these aggressive comments are a useful backdoor into the Thai mind. It is just unfortunate that they are expressed so abusively at times.

Ian it's nothing personal between me and abcdefg, at least not from my side :-) It's just a load of words on a screen.

With regards to learning more about Thai people, I think I do this by getting out and speaking, dealing and interacting with them every day. I don't see too much benefit from paying attention to one line e-mails but to each his own :-)

I'd have no problem calling it quits with abcdefg or anyone else. As I've said before I may come across serious because I vent political in my writing but if and when we meet you will see I am very different sometimes :-)

abcdefg, thanks for the special attention. I will link to your blog.

First of all, I apologise of laying a stupid comment on you at the very begining as I guest I was a bit rush into things that I haven't read through and understand. So My formal apology "I'm sorry".

If he hadn't got personal on me I would have let it go as I have already mentioned earlier. check out his block, he only accepts comments of his and the ones favourable to him. Is this a right behaviour ?
remarks that he couldn't answer he defer it to somewhere else......google ? Nation blog is the only blog I've entered so far.

Greg, in the main blog under contention, I did not see these 50 posts you mention, did you delete them before I had a chance? Why did you delete my two most recent comments? I really don't understand what is going on. As to the bloke who insulted me I was more concerned that I might have been tempted to thump him if we met in person, so felt it safer to avoid temptation:-) As abcde is a woman the same risk never applied:-) I have never yet managed to hit a woman. Dam on the other hand I find too funny to take seriously.
I think age is a factor, even now if Dam was to say, "ok let's call it quits and start again", I say sure.
But you and abcde both seem too young and stubborn to do this, it has become a personal issue. This is a pity because you both make useful and opposite comments.

In fact, it was. Why is you reaction so agressive then. I'm sure The TN have a much clearer understanding then you do and take appropiate

Ian I can laugh as well as anyone, and I have done here. However, when someone sends me fifty messages including one message saying "I will make you famous, wait and see" I think that's a little unfair to say I am over reacting.

I remind you that you withdrew from the blog party after far less abuse from one person, probably the same, and you received support. Too bad you don't return the decency.

When she said you were a sad old man who spends all his time on here, did you address her grievences then? Or was it just pressing buttons when you said you didn't give a damn what she thinks? :-)

As predicted, you can come up with nothing. No facts, no logic, no evidence to support your accustion on me, but hopefully you have some common sense.

Here's some :
1) My purpose of going into your blog day after day, post after post was to let people know how unfair you are, so what's the point of hiding my comments behind your mail box ?
2) Changing my identy to tackle your articles? What for ? In which blog am I in now ? Am I suppose to be afraid of you having me ban ?
3) So, you claimed I go into your mail box, as you deleted all my comments and some other unfavourable ones in your blog, you weren't able to delete the ones in your mailbox and you have to keep it and make illusion accusation on me.

You really need to see a shrink, you're going nuts.
Further, My english is more american, If I were to be abusive to you, I will call you a AH instead of a

Greg, I do feel you are over reacting, Dam is far worse with me yet most of the time I just find him entertaining; although he is becoming very predictable, as I now know all the right buttons to press:-)
Someone else, some time ago, said you were too serious, this is still true. Lighten up, if you insist upon grabbing by the horns every bull you meet you will simply end up with sore arms:-)
With Dam I have found it impossible to enter into any true dialogue, so I just treat him as a joke. Abc on the other hand can write English and can make relevant observations.
Why not try to understand her grievances, in doing so you will further your understanding of Thai people?

These things could lead people to doubt your mental stability :-)

Even though the guidelines are pretty much understandable, but as a blogger, I disagree with guidelines number # 1 and 4. They make me feel like we are all back in the 3rd grade again, though I very much understand why they are outlined as shown above. Some bloggers really do posted without any respect and integrity, and some occasionally show a 3rd grader mentality. HOWEVER, if the Nation prefers to allow people opinion their view as it is, this is a close-minded way to go. I feel that we all have choices to not respond to childish comments, though if some choose to continue, so be it. There is no need to guide them not to.

But don't be mistaken that I think your right or I'm afraid of you requesting to bann my comments. Is just that what my huseband said was right

1: Most of the comments in this nation blog rings around a hand's full of Farang backing each other.
2: There's no point of making comments when someone is so thick and couldn't understand your point is or try to look on a brighter side. So why bother at all ?

But Bear in mind R&W, If you do come up with another article that accuses someone unfairly. I'll be on your back again.

abcdefg, I don't think it's a case of taking sides, we are not children. I am sure TN staff can issue the appropriate reminders about the rules to the right people :-)

BTW I don't think you are doing yourself of your view any favours with your comment spamming. If you feel so strongly someone is being unfair, why don't you find a better way to respond? With the time you've spent on argumentatve comments without relevance, you could have found a friend to help you write a blog.

As I said, when I cite my facts and sources and you just send a stream of angry comments and say "I won't stop until you are fair", people just see this as a sign you can't respond with anything except the blog equivalent of spamming. All it really does is bump up my views and comments tally, that gets more reads for the article and the article will stick in people's minds far more than the unrelated comments beneath it.

IMHO If you can understand my blog on economics (where you left a comment saying I "know nothing about economics or Thailand") then surely you can write a piece yourself. Why not try? You can practise your English and maybe you will enjoy blogging? :-)

It's not really a big deal but since he has confirmed he will not stop and has extended his silliness to my personal blog site and is now saving his comments and re-posting them after I delete them, perhaps TN staff can look at this situation and decide what needs to be done?

All comments go to my inbox so I can forward them if need be.
It strikes me as personal spamming, which is what he wants.

Ian - You make a good point - I think it really is a backward step to have a nanny overseeing every blog. It is actually an insult to lots of intelligent people who can speak up for themselves. I think most insults are directed towards foreign bloggers and if there's really a foreign blogger out there who 'can't take it' I would really like to know who?
I believe this might have been instigated by one or two egocentric Nation staff who cannot respond for themselves, but rather needed to run to 'nanny' for assistance.

I think on the whole these blogs police themselves quite well, most people argue with others in a gentlmanly manner. The few lone morons posting blogs and comments can get a bit tedious at times but as Catch says they are also a source of entertainment. Although I am rather surprised that the Thai bloggers allow people like them to show the world how foolish some Thais can be. Perhaps they do not realise that most of these blogs come quite high in search engines such as google.

i think the incidences of real abuse or incitement of pure hatred are quite rare - and what incidences there have been I'm sure have been adequately dealt with as adults by way of either slapping the person, crticising the person or simply deleting the comments. Have things really been THAT bad, I haven't noticed. I have noticed a few scathing remarks towards populat Nation journalists - is this what you mean....if so I'm surprised at the fragility of such people? I have also noticed stupid remarks to one or two intelligent people who know they are remarks from a moron and I think have actually had a 'bit of fun' replying.

Also, a suggestion for a contact e-mail to report abuse etc. would be good?
