Thaksin and Suu Kyi: How can you compare hell with heaven?
Posted by Yoon , Reader : 4251 , 20:26:57
Print

Cambodian PM Hun Sen says Thaksin Shinawatr should get the kind of world attention that Aung San Suu Kyi gets.

That statement has inevitably become immediately controversial, for obvious reasons and the "uncomparable comparison" has drawn reactions from various quarters.

The most striking perhaps has come from former diplomat Surapong Jayanam who was once Thai ambassador to Burma.

Surapong usually doesn't pull punches when it comes to making his political statements.

So, when Hun Sen said he considered Thaksin as respectable as Suu Kyi, Surapong retorted:

"The difference between the two is like heaven and hell."

Do I have to ask who's heaven and who's hell?

C73,Expresso-san, and peacefulness-san, thank you for the compliment but I don't have good knowledge about chinese clasic, and of course I know less about it than both of you. I cannot pronounce a single word in Chinese, but somehow undesrstand the meaning of writing, because I know Japanese style漢字. Besides, Japanese have translated foreign books like hell since aincient times.:) So we can enjoy chinese great classics through translation.

And In my generation, there still remained some teachers who quoted 論語 to adomonish us, that's why those chinese maxims are somehow familiar to me. The most frequetnly quoted phrase (even though this is not a Kongzi's word) is:

少年易老学難成
一寸光陰不可軽

Hahaha, now I know it's really true. But in those days, I couldn't understand how true it is!!

With my rudimentary knowledge in Chinese, I would humbly offer my own translation of what Confucius says - which is a combination of what Plaadip and peacefulness have said, but I put in more literary translation and elaboration. It's purely my own interpretation.

子曰:“由!誨女知之乎?知之為知之,不知為不知,是知也。”

-------------------------------------
子曰 : = Confucius says:

由 = may be the name of his disciple who had committed a wrong - possibly from pretending or lying.

誨女知之乎? = "誨女", you repentant girl; "知之乎", do you know?

知之為知之 = If you honestly know something, recognize and say you do.

不知為不知 = If you don't know something, don't pretend and say you know.

是知也 = This represents honesty and virtue - a knowledge.

------------------------

Confucius teachings at that time centered on political and ethical matters. Much of his concern was with human behavior. The key elements of his teachings concerned with duty and humanity. By duty, he meant that all people should subordinate their own interests to the wider needs of the family and the community. A key point in his concept of duty was for individuals to work hard to fulfill their duties, only then, the affairs of the communities and the nation as whole could prosper as well.

As for his concept of humanity, the ruler must set a good example to start with, or else, there's no meaning.

For ordinary citizens, if there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character, then harmony at home, then order in the nation, then peace in the world....Well, I say forget about peace in the world as long as you have religious fanatics and "magnanimous" liberals

Plaadip san, I have seen your posts in various blogs. They tell me you are aware of the difference between thinking and reality, and you recognize that they do not always coincide in the real world. You are a pragmatic person with good insight derived from experience and education and are well-mannered. You also know Thailand very well just like wch san.

Your explanation to Al has opened up his mind. Hopefully he will not look at Chinese or Asian sayings in a mundane way which is characteristic of people who have not been educated in it.

I, myself, am more Western educated. My Chinese is only limited to the secondary school level. But to me, getting the gist of what you have learned and practice it in real life is more important than throwing out quotes and making metaphors and similes.... Well, I think it's pragmatism that I'm talking about - a traditional American virtue! Hmmm, I wonder if I have learned it in America for having had resided there for 18 years - 12 years in college alone, too busy making a living, I guess

Plaadip, c64
that the emphasis is put more on the advice not to pretend - than on epistemological aspects - this is possible and most probable. I agree. But isn't the consciousness about the range and the limitations of someone's own knowledge not the premise for the ability to avoid such mistakes?

Thank you for your valuable aspect! I didn't see that before.
comment 66
Plaadip date : 28/10/2009 time : 16.55

C64, Given the situation that the master said this phrase, the meaing will be " you should not pretend to know something that actually you don't know." It's very simple. The master tought one of his vulgar but daring disciple how to behave. The idea is similar to what Socrates said but Confucianism is more of conduct codes than a philosophy.

HA-HA, c59
Peacefulness, c55

From my point of view the differences between the two translations are essential for the meaning of this verse of Confucius. For me Peacefulness' translation is misleading if not wrong. It's like I would say: ''If you see that the sky is blue then realize that the sky is blue – if you see that the sky is not blue then realize that the sky is not blue....'' This would be trivial. Who is thinking that Confucius was saying such trivial nonsense? Nobody knows all and nobody is generally ignorant – so we can't use generalizations in the context of knowledge. We cannot say: ''If you know then realize that you know'' etc. We have to relate it to the object of knowledge if we want to understand this verse.

There may be many translations - but that doesn't mean that all of these translations are correct. Also the translation I used is not really good. It's staying too close to the literal translation. It's not making the meaning of this verse really obvious. The formulations appears to me too complicated. Also in the translation I used the three reflective levels in this verse are not becoming clear to the reader:

(1) It's not that what people are usually calling 'knowledge'. The factual knowledge like ''I know that 1+2=3'' or ''I know the address of my neighbour'' etc. It's the (reflected) knowledge about knowledge. It's the knowledge that I know specified facts but also that my knowledge is limited in case of other facts. To overlook this is the first reflective level I have to reach.

(2) This reflective knowledge is regarded by Confucius as more essential then the factual knowledge. ''This is knowledge'' he said. This is the second level I have to reach.

(3) And finally the third level: There are essential restrictions. We should be aware that there are things we don't know.

A better but rather free translation of mine would be:

Be aware of that what you know and particularly of that what you don't know. This is what is more essential than any knowledge about facts. (...because this is determining your self-perception.)

If Peacefulness' vulgar reaction is ok, then I have nothing more to add. Thank you.

Council gives ruling on Thaksin's rank
Published: 28/10/2009 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: News

The Council of State believes the sentencing of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to two years in jail is enough justification to strip him of his police rank and royal decorations.

The council ruling has been sent to the Cabinet Secretariat along with guidelines to strip Thaksin of his rank of police lieutenant colonel and the royal decorations bestowed on him.

The ruling came after the Royal Thai Police queried whether Thaksin's conviction was sufficient to strip him of his rank.

It claimed Thaksin was sentenced to prison for violating the rule on conflicts of interest under the anti-corruption law. He was cleared of malfeasance charges under articles 152 and 157 of the Criminal Code.

The police's position was that the offence was political, and so might not be enough to warrant revoking his rank under police regulations.

The Council of State, the government's legal arm, yesterday said the prison sentence handed down by the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions met all the conditions required to revoke Thaksin's rank and royal decorations.

As long as the jail sentence imposed on Thaksin was considered final, he should lose his rank regardless of the court in which he was tried.

The council cited PM's Office regulations on royal decorations which stipulate that a person can lose them if a jail sentence is considered final.

It said the police could only seek to revoke the royal decorations associated with Thaksin's police rank.

The Cabinet Secretariat or other agencies could seek to revoke the other decorations.

Ian, on behalf of the other posters on this blog,"us guys". I should thank you for your very detailed explanation of what is and what isn't a " convict".
However,I don't see the connection to my posting as I have never refered to the fugative,Shinawatra, as a "convict" I refer to him as he is a "fugative", a criminal on the run from the law.
You also seem a little confused as to how he left Thailand whilst he was on bail.To remind the readers of the facts here. The "fugative" applied to the courts to visit overseas and proceeded to skip bail.
You are a little light on facts in this case, and your memory doesn't seem to serve you well. It could be because of your advancing age though.
Pleople seem to do and say odd things when they pass their sell by date.Take the good General Chavalit. Please take him.

I think I found a better translation:
The Master said, "You, shall I teach you what knowledge is? When you know a thing, to hold that you know it; and when you do not know a thing, to allow that you do not know it - this is knowledge."

I am not sure if you are able to see and understand the differences.

Frankie, the thing that really bugs you guys is that Thaksin is not a "convict" a convict is a convicted person serving time in prison. He is not even an "escaped convict" he never went to prison. Neither did he "evade" prison, he was politely escorted out of Thailand with his family and numerous parcels of luggage.

Yesterday, I saw Supalak showed up in the Nation TV and was repeating his creed that the territorial demarcation is a techinical issue. I got aghast. Is he a broken record player which cannot feed any inputs? He can sit tight even after he saw how highly political an issue it is. Incredible. And he did not utter a word of critisism against the politicians who politicised the issue, which, in his opinion, should be purely a "technical" one. I hope his type of fuzzy journalist will not have a big influence over the Nation's editorial. He just repeats NGO's naive creeds in stead of analyzing by himself. What an easy job it is!

Comparing Thaksin to Suu Kyi and coming to the conclusion that they are similar in any respect is the act of an irrational mind. Hun Sen should join the Hugo Chavez - Amedinejad gang, he'd fit right in.

Hun Sen is where he is today because of a coup. Shinawatra " a human rights abuser of the worst kind" is where he is because of a coup. They go well together " birds of a feather". We also should not forget that the fugative, Shinawatra, once funded a failed coup against Hun Sen. Shinawatra the convict who speaks against coups everyday of his miserable life.
Has Hun Sen really forgiven Shinawatra?? Anyway, who cares. To hell with them both. There is life after Hun Sen and the fugative, Shinawatra.
A piece of advice to the new found song writers on this blog. Stick to what you do best.

Ian, I don't think it's good idea to let Thaksin stay in Cambodia and be used to stir the things up for better conccession in the territorial issue. "Keep an eye on him" .....? it might be helpful only when the PM is planning to assasinate Thaksin, I guess. :)

This is what Abhist said according to the Nation,

I assume you were joking, if not perhaps ND can explain the difference to you

It takes two to be insulted, one to give and one to receive. Hun Sen gave, Abhisit chose to receive, that was Abhisit's mistake. He displayed his immaturity with the diplomatic game. He thinks that controlling the Thai media is the same as controlling the world media.
Sure it is a slap in the face for Thailand, because Abhisit lacked the skills to avoid the blow and return his own. I can think of numerous responses that would have given Abhisit, and hence Thailand the last laugh.
I guess Abhisit was never a member of the Oxford Union. Heck, even an East End street vendor could have done better.

Ian c.19: yes, good piece of songwriting. How about this one, my favourite. Probably sung by a few self-exiled politicians. Substitute….for Tipperary, etc.:

It was a favorite of U-boat crews, resigned to their fate after being hounded by Asdic and Allied superiority in general, after 1942.

It's a long way to Tipperary,
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square,
It's a long long way to Tipperary,
But my heart's right there.

Every ambitious Thai politician who wants to take a short cut to power and riches should practice singing this, just in case.

The Nation blog is at the crossroads between being dragged to the muddy and filthy trenches and being led to the Munich Octoberfest where beer and laughter flows. What will it be?

Although some of you would like to discredit the views of some Thais here stating that they just speak for a segment of Thai society; please be aware that a recent Dusit Poll show overwhelmingly (73%) that Thais felt that hun sen's remarks only served to create further divisiveness between Thailand and Kampuchea.

It was a diplomatic 'foot in mouth'.

Ian nice lyrics put iin a chorus and a tune to it and you may have a have a hit on your hands! Well done sir!!

Ian,
your song made me laugh. It describes quite well the pathologic situation in some circles. The Anti-Thaksin attitude has become a kind of political ideology making people unable to think in a rational way.

I doubt that Thaksin will be able to stay in Cambodia – but it's fun to think that he will become an economic advisor there. Poor AV – that will challenge his poor economic policy more than ever. At least it would be no damage for Cambodia - and for Thailand as well.

Comparing Aung San Suu Kyi the "Saint" and Thugsin the Crooked Fugitive is like comparing a lion and a rat. One is elegant, patient, determined and works in broad daylight while the other is treacherous, insincere, untrustworthy and likes working in the dark. Do I need to say who is which?

Ian the sage of the used to be Nation Weblog (now a rubbish blog) used to write birds of like feathers flock together. Green bean vermicelli "Hun Sen" and "toxic" Thugsin are both thugs and gangsters or "naklieng" in Thai. That's why they could go along wth each other well. Is that so difficult to understand?

There is no way that Aung San Suu Kyi can be compared to Thaksin. Aungsan has been brave enough to remain in house arrest for years, firmly standing up for democracy right in the den of military dictatorship. She is undergoing mental and physical deprivation without flinching when she could have easily give in to the Junta's demands and received freedom in return, perhaps to exile, and a more comfortable life. She is a symbol of defiance to oppression much admired by the international fraternity, progressive and conservative. No wonder the Burmese student movement is now retaliating Hun Sen for his ill considered comparison with Thaksin.

As for Thaksin, he's light years behind Ang San in terms of guts and self-sacrifice, mainly working in the comfort of a luxury condominium with easy access to gourmet food and the like. His support comes mainly from a collection of dictatorships and rather elementary leaders in marginal countries, as can be seen in his recent travel itinerary. But I know I'm whistling against the wind in these blogs.

You media really tries to stir up things to serve your purpose na.

As far as I see no freedom fighters are good at running a country. Look at Nehru's after he got India back from the British. India had been one of a hell until recently when she changed her policy. Anyway, fighting for freedom is the first step of being a true country.

I think it's more appropriate if you compare Myanmar Junta with the AV government now since AV would probably lead Thailand democracy backward to Myanmar level if he's allowed.

PM Hun Sen sees both as political victims. That's much far you can comparing the two. And everybody who is sensible knows it.

Outside this how can anyone trying to compare Thaksin with Aung San Su Yii? Aung San Su Yii has never run a country.

Although her fighting for democracy in Burma is heroic, I really don't know what she has done to the country so far?

The Truth is Freedom

Aung San Suu Kyi born an elite and single handedly resigned Burma to a system of dictatorship for decades to come.

Contrary to world media opinion, I see Taksin and this women no different, they both had very poor politician perception and they both had a non-compromising all or nothing attitude which ultimately resulted in their influence being nullified and their countries suffering greatly.

Aung San Suu Kyi had a chance to be part of a team that could slowly evolve the country into a working democracy, but she chose to threaten the people who were willing to relinquish some power, not reward them as any shrewd politician would do. She presented to the power brokers in Burma the persona similar to an undergrad student political activist at a Western university. A blind Freddy would see her childish approach would result in excessive restriction.

Taksin similar treated the power brokers in Thailand with the same amount of disdain and disrespect and the result was similar.

I see it as both created hell in order to go to heaven.

Presumably, Hun Sen has forgotten the EXIM loan to the Burmese junta which Thaksin pushed through so that they could buy Shin Sat equipment, let alone the other investments which he/Thailand arranged with the Burmese military, the very ones who have confined Suu Kyi to house arrest for nearly two decades.

How therefore can there be any comparison at all?
