So, whos lying?

One day after Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh quoted Cambodian PM Hun Sen as saying he was offering a home for Thaksin Shinawatr, Khmer Information Minister Khieu Kanharith was quoted by a foreign news agency as denying that flatly.

DPA quoted Khieu as saying: "He (Hun Sen) didn't say that. Some people have said we would allow Thaksin to have a permanent home in Cambodia. It's not true."

The Cambodian minister said Cambodia, which has an extradition agreement with Thailand, "knows our legal obligations."

Chavalit met Hun Sen earlier this week after which the Pheau Thai Party's chairman quoted the Khmer PM as saying Thaksin was his "great friend"and victim of unfair treatment who deserved a respectable home.

Chavalit quote Hun Sen as saying: "It's a beautiful home, too."

Hun Sen missed this morning opening ceremony of the 15th Asean Summit, saying he had to leave Phnom Penh for Bangkok later today because he had to greet visiting South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who is also expected to be in Hua Hin for the Asean + 3 conference.

It's the presentation that stick in people's throats. And which she needs to work on.

Can you agree with that - don't make quick judgment and generalizations.

Newspaper section: News

The offer by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to shelter former premier Thaksin Shinawatra ahead of and during the Asean summit is inappropriate and a political error.

He should not use the summit as a venue to talk about his close friend who is wanted by the Thai government. His comments to the press upon arrival in Thailand on Friday is a slap in the government's face on its own soil.

Relations between the countries have been strained over recent years due largely to disputed claims over the ownership of the ancient Hindu temple, Preah Vihear, and the ongoing border demarcation issue.

But the situation worsened last week after Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, who is chairman of the opposition Puea Thai Party, returned from a visit to Phnom Penh and broke the news about Hun Sen's offer to Thaksin.

Many questioned the virtue of Gen Chavalit's visit as, not only did it fail to improve the two countries' relations, but also paved the way for Hun Sen to drive a wedge between the fragile relationship.

Hun Sen knows too well the Thai government will never keep quiet on the Thaksin issue. But instead of helping maintain good ties, he challenged the relationship by ignoring the extradition treaty both countries signed in 2001 to hand over Thaksin if he set foot in Cambodia. Worse, Thaksin will probably be appointed Hun Sen's economic adviser.

Thaksin is now in self-exile after being sentenced in absentia to two years in jail for abusing his power as prime minister in helping his wife at the time, Khunying Potjaman, win the bid in the Ratchadaphisek land purchase.

Without further discussion between the two governments, Phnom Penh should not unilaterally decide this issue is not subject to the extradition treaty.

Hun Sen also made another political mistake by likening Thaksin to Burmese Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi whose house arrest has been extended by 18 months.

What Thaksin did while in power cannot be compared to the Burmese opposition leader's fight for democracy in her country.

What Hun Sen said was meant to humiliate the Thai government and tried to imply which side he wants to align with between the government-to-government relationship and his personal relationship with the ousted prime minister.

As Asean leaders are meeting to discuss ways to become "one community" by 2015, Cambodia's stance not only worsens ties between our countries, but also impinges on the whole grouping which is attempting to cultivate better ties.

Stal c12. This all began because of Cristysweet's many months upon months of hateful and derisive blogs against Thailand, her people, and her culture.

With every blog she authors she spews derogative, denigrating and invective filled rants not caring for propriety and decency.

She also should be banned, if anyone else were to be. She also must be banned.

Hun Sen is where he is today because of a coup. Shinawatra " a human rights abuser of the worst kind" is where he is because of a coup. They go well together " birds of a feather". We also should not forget that the fugative, Shinawatra, once funded a failed coup against Hun Sen. Shinawatra the convict who speaks against coups everyday of his miserable life.
Has Hun Sen really forgiven Shinawatra?? Anyway, who cares. To hell with them both. There is life after Hun Sen and the fugative, Shinawatra.

What's with this guy, its_kant ? Today [Sat] he posted maybe a hundred trolling postings.

K. Suthichai, I really think you should expel him from here. I read these blogs for pleasure and for information, and want your paper to thrive but allowing this to go on denigrates your paper and people will criticize you and the paper's management for being very lax. I read blogs in international online publications sometimes and I've never seen this kind of trolling allowed.

I think most will agree that from this point on the Asean meeting will accomplish little if anything. Hun Sen has jump right in to the middle of thai internal affairs. This is not going to be pretty, I invision futher trouble on the shared border. God Bless Thailand and protect her from those that wish to harm her

Now it becomes the case of, not whether who's lying; but what does Hun Sen hope to achieve with his 'friendly' gesture towards thaksin by offering a house and the post of economic advisor?

This is not a well-reasoned. logical and rational action by a ruler of a country that has need of friends and investments. It is a personal matter that has gotten out of hand. Although he says it a ‘private’ matter, it has a political overtone. Hun Sen of course knows this.

So what is he thinking?

That chavalit can surround Thailand with supporters in Myanmar, Kampuchea, and Malaysia? To do what he is contemplating has geopolitical/ASEAN-wide impact.

This is a major storm which about to occur within ASEAN and will have long-lasting repercussions.

Massein: "He heard what he needed to hear" and he said what needed to be said "to please his paymaster." chavalit is just an old 'kwai' looking for a field to plow.

He said it, and meant it at the time, but did not foresee the fallout. we are not talking about a political genius. Were are talking about a despot
that rules with a iron fist, and a treaty means nothing to him. He just didn't expect the general to start blabing about a open seceret, just before the asean. I'm sure all of mr t's video conferences have come from there. The ideal that the gov doesn't know where mr t is at 24/7 is absurd. they proble know when he takes a dump and the color

Cambodian PM did not offer Thaksin a home
By The Nation

Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen did not offer fugitive ex-Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra a home in Cambodia, Cambodia's spokesman Khieu Kanharith. "He didn't say that," Khieu Kanharith said. "Some people have said we would allow Thaksin to have a permanent home in Cambodia - it's not true."

The headlines says it all. chavalit has lied to gain credence from his master thaksin.

We can all see that followers and supporters of thaksin, like c1, try ever so hard to emulate their serial lying master.

It doesn't work, there aren't that many ignorant naive people out there. ONly people who have their hands out for 'rally fee'!

I have a political map on my left hand as long as this Indochinese peninsula (of which word is hated by most of Thais).

When Hunsen struggled in Cambodian civil wars against various warring factions, the most headaches that failed his military aggression were Thai army and Thai border police, who often rearmed opponents to fight back Hunsen troop.
This tricky plays and profiteering out of it was Thai army who were commanded by Gen Kamlangek, Gen Chavarat and Gen Chavalit Yonchaiyut.

Hown Hunsen receives Gen Chavalit in his two arms,,,, Time enough passed by ?.

Personally I feel Hunsen play Thai old and young toddlers, while hiding his deeply incisioned grudge against whole Thailand.

His ambition is to unify whole Indochina under modern Angkorean empire. Cambodians are different people who migranted from Yellow River civilization. They think big and different.

Thaksin was overthrown in a military coup, really nothing else matters. I'm sure the Daad or UDD/ Reds will be elected, again...
As if this country will ever hold another election..
