Prem and Chavalit: You always hurt the one you love
Posted by Yoon , Reader : 1079 , 06:25:22
Print

THE PRESIDENT of the Privy Council broke his own precedent last week: He started talking in public without being asked. General Prem Tinsulanonda walked up to a group of waiting reporters and declared: "You don't have to pose the question. I will talk to you about Jiew."

When the usually reticent "Pa Prem" initiates a conversation on a particular subject on a certain personality, the whole country stops to listen.

"Jiew" - General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh - had just joined Thaksin Shinawatra's Pheu Thai Party as its "chairman". Prem was disappointed - nay, upset was more like it.

The Privy Council president had previously deliberately delivered a message of warning: "Think very carefully before you decide to join Pheu Thai. You might be labelled a traitor if you do."

Under normal circumstances, Chavalit would have heeded such a direct admonition. So, when he declared his decision "to move from a neutral stand to take sides", Jiew knew his mentor would feel betrayed. But, despite his age, Chavalit's political ambition got the better of him.

Prem's normal refusal to make public comments in a political storm was often open to interpretation. But when he decided to break his famous silence, it was almost like a thunderbolt. You could almost hear a heartbroken general cry out for vindication.

Chavalit knew he couldn't counter with a tit-for-tat response. After all, he might have to change tack again if politics takes a new turn.

"Pa Prem used strong words against me because of his real concern for me. I know he loves me. I want to tell Pa Prem: Please don't be mad at me."

Of course, not many political observers here will take Chavalit's conciliatory, flowery response too seriously. He isn't known for meaning what he says, especially when he says nice things about people on the other side of the political fence. As the song "You Always Hurt the One You Love" says:

You always hurt the one you love,

The one you shouldn't hurt at all,

You always take the sweetest rose,

And crush it till the petals fall.

But never for a moment assume that Prem's "Jiew" is so naive as not to realise how serious Prem was with his rare, public statement about political loyalty, personal concern and betrayal.

Deep down, Chavalit will probably try to console himself by telling his lieutenants something to this effect: "Pa Prem wasn't really hitting out at me. He loves me too much to hurt me. Perhaps his real target is somebody else."

He doesn't have to name names, of course. There is little doubt that that "somebody else" is only waging a proxy war. It's both a political war at the national level, as well as a war of nerves between old friends.

Didn't Chavalit realise that his decision to join Pheu Thai could constitute the "last straw" in their long-cherished relationship?

Of course, he did. The red shirts and Pheu Thai have made Prem the focus of all anti-government activities. Chavalit also knows that Thaksin Shinawatra has made Prem his personal crusade, on the grounds that he believes Prem was behind the September 2006 coup that ousted him.

Prem has denied Thaksin's accusations all along. And he thought he could at least trust Chavalit to be on his side - or at least remain "neutral" if he didn't want to get involved in a political face-off.

Jiew has in a way forced the issue into the open. For the first time in Thai political history, in this national charade, none of the major characters, usually left untouched at least publicly for the sake of tradition and stability, have been spared.

The only words left unsaid so far between the two protagonists are: "I won't be at your funeral." But then, sometimes, some feelings are better left unsaid until the right time.

It took me one minute to reach this blog. Kant should be banned, as many people are expecting, but is it technically possible? Maybe he can send his trolls from the internet cafe after banned.

I did not expect Hun Sen went that far. Today's Nation's editorial is very good. Thai media has good reasons to bash Hun Sen, and Thaksin, Chawalit. I think this Thaksin-Chawalit "tactic" "if they really have any...." will be backfired, if Thais are still sane.

Chavalit's trip raises tension
Published: 23/10/2009 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: News

With his visit on Wednesday to Cambodia, former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh has virtually opened this country to interference in its internal affairs and further complicated the Thai-Cambodian border conflict.

The trip was claimed to have been taken in a private capacity, to help ease Cambodian-Thai relations which have been soured by the Preah Vihear temple dispute.

Regrettably, the outcome appears to have had the opposite, and insulting, effect.

News reports quoting Cambodian Premier Hun Sen as saying his country was prepared to shelter fugitive prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra are a direct slap in the face of the Thai government, if not all its people.

The statement by Mr Hun Sen - quoted by General Chavalit, and local and international media - that he would arrange a beautiful house for Thaksin to stay in, makes it harder for the Cambodian leader and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to look the other in the eye when they meet at the Asean summit in Hua Hin this weekend.

It may perhaps be premature to guess why the Cambodian leader chose to say what he reportedly said. However, Mr Hun Sen's statements only confirm the long-standing rumour that personal ties between the Cambodian prime minister and Thaksin reach beyond Thailand and Cambodia's sovereign interests.

One might even construe from his statements that the Cambodian leader has demonstrated his personal friendship with Thaksin is far more important than Thai-Cambodian relations which dictate the well-being of people living on both sides of the border.

And this only raises more doubts about the chances of the two countries being able to successfully resolve the long-standing border dispute in the near future.

As a former prime minister and currently chief adviser of the opposition Puea Thai Party, Gen Chavalit can actually help contribute towards improving Cambodian-Thai diplomatic relations.

His long personal connections with the Cambodian government and military leaders are considered a great resource, if they were put to better use for the peoples of the two countries.

It is a sad disappointment that he has used that resource only to help prop up the legitimacy of the one man who brought him out of what till recently had seemed a permanent political retirement.

It is widely accepted that the Cambodian-Thai border dispute is a complicated affair. It requires patience, a friendly attitude and the political will of the top leaders to resolve the problem.

Mr Hun Sen - in a sudden change to Phnom Penh's previous stance in trying to make the border conflict a regional or international issue - has suggested that the dispute be tackled through the two countries' border commission.

This perhaps was the only good news brought home by Gen Chavalit's delegation.

The Preah Vihear border dispute is a conflict between two friendly countries and should definitely be resolved peacefully through their border mechanism which has been established for the purpose.

Any success through this mechanism will hinge largely on the condition that both sides create an atmosphere conducive to fruitful discussion.

Embarrassing a negotiating party - like what Mr Hun Sen has just done to the Thai government - certainly does not promote the desired friendly atmosphere."

"Who am I a kitchen boy should have the right to address His Majesty the Vice King"

Looks to me that this kitchen boy is attempting to push the LM envelope.

Looks like you're saying that there is more than one King in Thailand, boy.

Should we see whether this is a chargeable offence by a well-known anti-monarchic Thai living in New Jersey, USA?

His many subtle comments become more eloquent and his atitude more dirisive of Monarchy - the more he opens his mouth.

This is another case for the webmaster to look into with the help of 'public servants'.

ND, in this modern age a public figure can no longer claim privacy. Clinton got a "blow job" as a private individual, it ultimately lost him his Presidency. An unguarded comment by a public figure can sends stocks tumbling, even gestures and facial expressions are analysed. Prem is not an idiot, he must know there is no such thing as a "personal comment" when he speaks to the press.
comment 12
notdisappointed date : 22/10/2009 time : 15.04

pj c9, There you go again trying to 'lead' people to think that Pa Prem did so in his capacity as Privy Councilor. When he did so as an individual, a friend, co-worker, and former superior officer when he was asked. Are you saying that Pa Prem has to shut himself out of any communications with his friends and associates and cannot offer any advice to them because he is a Privy Councilor? That he did so he did privately. It was chavalit who made it public. And it's you fanning the flames. How blackhearted and selfish you are.

Should we also make the same analogy of what does a 'cook', living in a democratic civil society know about a country that needs to nurture both to berate a respected elder statesman who has done more good for the country than a 'kitchen boy' has done in his short life. A person who is so obsessed since his brother was seemingly murdered by the bloodthirsty military over 10 years ago.

Your bias and anti-monarchic stance has already been noted and found wanting.

I’ve said this before and I will say it again. Gen Prem has a problem with reconciling he statements and his actions. His recent statements on TV warning Big Jew is another evidence that shows his inconsistency.

Gen Prem basically implies that “Phue Thai Party” is his enemy and the enemy of the state, while the “Pheu Thai Party” holds the majority votes of the people.

For me I see that Gen Prem is in fact the enemy of the state. Since Gen Prem has always uses his power and connects dictate and deter the political outcomes, which against the will of the majority.

Solicited support for his benefit in domestic power struggle from a country with which his own country has terriotrial disputes......and let the PM of the country set the regime change of his own country as a condition for compromise. I think that's what he did in Cambodia. If Thai media cannot see his action beyond the context of domestic power game, I think that they are really sick.

Maybe, it's time for Stal to come out and analize this.

Gen Prem’s warning of Big Jew shows the lack of judgment on Gen Prem’s side, since Gen Prem as the President of the Privy Council represents the palace. He should not have any comment on who is joining what political party.

Gen Prem’s publicly admits giving Big Jew a warning for joining the Pheu Thai Party saying that Big Jew can be consider a traitor. Moreover in the statement Gen Prem has also mistaken his own personal will for the will of the majority of the country.

"...........We have seen a lot of people lost their senses of independence and self-respect and act as if they are slaves of some people in current events. We thought that slavery was thing of the past. But, in fact, it is not. It just changed from conditional slavery to voluntary slavery. Modern time slaves do not lose their legal liberty or human rights. They have sold their souls to some people to whom they are loyal to for mostly “money” or other kinds of reward.................."

C6, but I don't think Hun Sen will say the same thing in the Asean summit when he was asked. (Now it's become a main isssue of ASEAN summit for Thai media.) I am curious how Hun Sen or Khu Khanarit or, a spokesperson of MOFAC will dodge the question. Maybe a outright denial? Then how will the general explain "the infromation gap"? :)

And this sad state of affairs with Hun Sen has shown that chavalit will do any despicable act to please his new master $$$$$$. It has shown that both have no conscience.

No wonder Pa Prem warned chavalit about doing something treasonous!! His deed was a betrayal of his country. Better Hun Sen should build another house for the traitor 'chavalit yongjaiyut'.
