What's the deal between Thaksin and Chavalit?

The return of Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh to Pheau Thai Party was said to have taken place after the two had talked directly through  a web-cam facility.

Thaksin badly needed a "head" at his party. Chavalit was looking for a political role to play. It didn't take them long to come to an agreement that Chavalit would become "chairman" of the party while officially Yongyuth Vichaidit remains the official party leader. Chairman of the Party's Advisory Board  is former Army Chief Gen Chetta Thanajaro.

During their discussions, Chavalit offered Thaksin to set the stage for reconciliation, having told the ex-premier that the "old way" of  trying to win at all cost wouldn't improve things. On the contrary, the situation will only get worse.

Chavalit was said to have told Thaksin that he would reach out to the military leaders, with whom he still holds close ties, at least at certain level, so that some sort of reconciliation between Thaksin and the army brass could take place.

The possibility of direct patching-up talks between Thaksin and Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, the Privy Council's president, is remote.

Thaksin was told that Chavalit couldn't promise to make things happen overnight. But if Thaksin tones down his aggressive approach, perhaps a gradual process of reconciliation with both the political and military establishments could get started.

Thaksin, who has been "headhunting" for a "real party leader" to head Pheau Thai in the new election, more or less accepted Chavalit's proposed formula without any preconditions.

But then they both know that things could get worse before they get better. Despite Thaksin's confident rhetoric, he realizes that his bargaining power could dwindle with the passage of time. Even a Pheau Thai's victory in the next election can't guarantee that he can come home as a free man any time soon.

Chavalit knows he can't produce magical results either. But then, he also knows that Thaksin is clutching at straws politically. At least, he can expect some reasons reward for services rendered. This isn't a political underwriting deal. He can only offer a "best-effort" pledge.

ND, 220 banned politicians is a ridiculous state of affairs. Most of these would simply be "middle management" types getting on with basic tasks, yet with more gained knowledge of these tasks then the present inexperienced incumbents. All Thai politicians at this level are corrupt, no matter what their political affiliation, so lets have back the ones who understood how to do it, get Thailand moving again.

No really Ian. Those 111 and then 109 more were not 'able' leaders just old time politicians who could negotiate the best seating at the trough.

You think that any of those banned politicians had the well-being of the country at heart? At the end of the day all you can see is that the red movement is still led by thaksin and his henchmen. That they are second-rate reflects on thaksin's ceo-style leadership which makes his subordinates second-raters - present and past-tense. This present leadership are the same as the former 111 + 109 except they don't have as much 'polish and finesse'.

BTW chalerm and chavalit have been involved in politics for years and 'like will associate with like'; that's why we see self-serving second-raters within the sphere of influence of thaksin.

peacefulness, re c.9,
"tum dee dai dee , tum chua dai chua , cha rhue reow . good will be rewarded with good, evil with eivil, sooner or later.........."

Sounds nice. Trouble is, it's false.

In many cases, those who do evil are not punished - just look at Taksin for an example. And many who do good suffer great evil, for example those killed in teh awful train crash in Huahin this morning.

The Reds need to give up on the "strong leader" strategy and keep working on developing a strong foundation of grassroots democracy and a solid policy platform.

The strong man policy never works in the long-term: it is a quick road to complacency, corruption, dictatorship and finally spectacular downfall.

I wish all of these old bastards would just kick the bucket already, and stop fucking things up for the generations that are about to inherit the mess they made.

ND. As I see it the problems are partly of your (The Thai people's) own making. Firstly the coup, then the banning of 100+ plus politicians, then the destruction of the Somak and Somchai governments has led to the Red movement having second class, second rate leadership. Leaders who will not compromise nor negotiate with other parties.
So having removed the able leaders of the Reds, you complain about the inferior quality of those leaders which are left.

All that yoon says is fine and good since we know that there is no one of any reasonable stature and ‘borami’ in puea tai party. And Stal has made many good point in his c3. puea tai are a collection of self-serving individuals looking for the main chance. They have no loyalty to their constituents, who are supposed to be those disaffected and disenfranchised. But the real question that needs to be asked is:
What was chalerm thinking, by sending a clip of Kasit haranguing Hun Sen, this prior to his being made Foreign Minister?

chalerm always had a feet in mouth disease, but this takes the cake. Is he a Thai or Khmer? Given the tense border situation; what was he thinking? He should be reprimanded and muzzled by the new party chairman. If chavalit did say to thaksin, “the "old way" of trying to win at all cost wouldn't improve things. On the contrary, the situation will only get worse.” Looks like chalerm is being his old self – a loose cannon.

And he’s the party’s chairman of MPs; a party that hopes to govern Thailand. Can we trust a man like chalerm to sensibly, rationally and logically be a minister again? A man whose sons are thugs and hoodlums? A man whose sons attack pub goers and whose son killed a policeman?

And our farang friends want a GE. Do they think that the grassroots will come to power or thaksin’s nominees. Name us some names of party members that you feel; our all-knowing farangs, who you think, would be good ministers. And what type of government would we have, if the likes of chalerm, jutuporn, noppadon, karun, et al, inhabit this party?

K. Suthichai: you haven't discussed the intriguing question of what's in it for Gen. Chaovalit. Does the fact that Gen. Chaovalit was implicated by the Poh Poh Cho in the 7 October near- massacre have anything to do with him finally deciding on the plunge? Surely one does not have to be an Einstein to deduce that with a Pua Thai return to power, if only in alliance with Pumejai Thai, Gen. Chaovalit will be protected to some extent from whatever happens negatively to his interests in the judicial process in this case. He will have a body of politicians to fight on his behalf, as his case moves forward along the appropriate judicial channels. So it's in his interest that the Pua Thai succeeds politically, and soon. That's my analysis. He may be joined by others implicated in the 7th October affair.

There are powerful interests working to form a Pumejai Thai and Pua Thai alliance, to replace the Democrats in power.

I would think given his record that having Chawalit on your team is about as reassuring as having Newin as a loyal ally.
