Thaksin: Look, no wig!
Posted by Yoon , Reader : 1331 , 19:55:56

Thaksin Shinawatr is frantically denying rumours that he is suffering from postrate cancer and teams of doctors from Bangkok have been flying o Dubai to treat him.

Democrat MP Boonyod Sukthinthai yesterday challenged Thaksin to shake his head violently when he appears on the video link next time, and make sure to wear short-sleeve shirts to counter speculation that he has been losing hair, wearing a wig, and has worn only shirts with  long sleeves to hide the scars of cancer treatment.

Thaksin has confirmed he doesn't have cancer. After posting a denial in his tweets earlier today, he followed up with a set of pictures showing him at the barber's, with the caption reading:

"This should dispel al the liars' stories that I have been wearing a wig..."

He may have to go naked on the next video link to prove that there are no tell-tell scars that were supposed to be part of his cancer treatment.

sardines, your first paragraph indicates you don't understand me - my character. On a wider scope, you don't know how to read people. This time I did not punctuate. Do you feel better or worse?

I'm not here to stop people like you from posting nor am I here to impress others with my knowledge. I'm here for fun. I may say things to some people whom their characters I don't like. On such occasions, my comments may be interpreted as confrontational - but only if they select to be. In such cases, I continue at my leisure confronting them because I need to have no respect on them.

On your second paragraph, you repeated what you said earlier which I already said you are being unrealistic and naive and crying like a baby who has just wet his pant.

Don't you think Thanong and Yoon, as journalists, would invent something like this out of thin air? As journalists, they have more sources and they may just be reporting something reported elsewhere. Who are you to say they are being unprofessional implying that they are spreading rumor with a malicious intent? I think Plaadip also questioned you on this? Sometimes, I think you idealists are just too much!

expresso,

Ok "man" I'll give you a break "dude". Anyways, if you don't wish a comeback such as mine, then may I suggest that you don't punctuate the last sentence at trying offend? It normally takes a lot away from the "gist".

2ndly, if this was your blog, ND, Ian, Piset, Felix or whoever, I would not make the same criticizm. My point is plain and simple. Journalist when blogging or posting, while in the position of representing their establishment (this is the Nation Blog, by the way) need to hold themselves to higher standards when giving out information on THEIR COMPANY'S blog.

sardine, you seem to have missed the gist of what I said in my c34. Instead, in your c35, you selected to play your word game like a member of the league which Erik has termed: people with superior intellectual capability.

Give me a break, man!

Wind doesn't come from an empty cave. There's a Chinese axiom on this but I won't post it here. For you to get so hysterical and calling others not professional because of this news or "rumor" simply shows the naivety in you. I have doubt that you have the ability of judging what's right or wrong reading the many news or "rumors" out there!

hello expresso,

seeing from you very one sided posts and opinions and unwillingness of rarely (if any) accept different views from your own, the comment of saying that I am a person who is very dangerous will be taken as a compliment.

thank you.

sardines, at times you should reflect on yourself if you are the biased one when you constantly accuse of Yoon and Thanong of their ulterior motive. Like I had said before I could not see what such 'deliberate rumor' - as people like you have had termed - could bring about. Rather, I think people like yourself are naive but like to speak as if you have righteousness and the truth but totally impractical in the thinking.

People may have friends in the hospital - be they nurses or doctors - whom they hear such a story from. Do you expect people to quote who their names are when they talk about them? sardines, your mind is on the other side that you are not thinking straight but you choose to express your biased opinion nevertheless subconsciously. People like you are dangerous!

hi Plaadip,

I guess you and I have to both join the PJA (Political Junkies Anonymous) LOL

I have no problem with either Thanong or Yoon writing blogs and even on this topic as long as they keep in perspective and explain that at the time it is only a rumor or it is what they believe and not a fact.

As journalists, I think they need to keep higher standards for themselves.
comment 31
Plaadip date : 23/09/2009 time : 14.01

Sardines, What I meant is if the nation staff had asked for the official confirmation the info with the hospital, their answer would have beem "no comments', because it's an usual response of doctors when asked about patient's private information. Anyway this is just a hypothesis o of mine, the Nation might not have tried it. So it's not important anyway.

Yes, the hospital deny the information that their sruff was sent to Dubai to give cancer treatment for Thaksin. So the rumor might not be true. But I still hope that Yoon and Thanong continue put this type of "speculative" stuff on thier blogs, because as a political junkie, I like this kind of information. :)

It seems to be my misunderstanding that Prachatai was "under attack" by a hucker, because other posters did not have the same trouble as I had when I accessed ths site. Sorry for the misinformation.

SARDINES date : 23/09/2009 time : 13.17

plaadip,

I only caught the last part of that same program but I thought they said that they made a "denial" and not a "no comment". I might have not heard correctly. You sure?

Prachatai: No, I don't post there but sometimes stop by and read the articles and comments. I noticed, as you said, that sometimes you don't agree with other posters but that makes it only more interesting to read (to me at least). It makes the posters, as well as the readers, see both/all views before making a complete opinion.

hello massein c25:

Everyone has a right to an "opinon" and jounalist but it's different to state an opinion as a fact until proven. This is especially important for a journalist as they are in the position of providing the people with the facts and, if they want, their views and opinions but is important to clearly distinguish this to the readers.

Some medical conditions, HIV, Cancer , etc cannot be concealed for long, so to deny their existence if they actually existed would ultimately weaken one's claims to the truth.
By making a strong denial Thaksin puts his credibility on the line, he would be a fool not to realise this.

Sardine, yes I am. You also posted your comments there? I think the site is interesting because they are more focasing on the theme they are discussing, although I tend to disagree with most posters there.

Yes, I saw the same news in Sorayuth's news program. But I am not 100 % sure that the doctors told a truth. Besides, I guess that probably Thanong, or Yoon or their junior reporters in the paper tried to confirm the information with the hospital to no avail. Maybe their answer was " no comment" because it's related to doctor-patient confidentiality. The hospital came out to deny the info only after the dem's spokesman picked up this issue and Thaksin started fighting back.

If the Nation did not try it, they have to appreciate my overestimate. :)

comment 20
SARDINES date : 22/09/2009 time : 13.31

Hello Plaadip c 17:

Actually, the U.S. has a similar law which you can sue persons for "slander". I do agree with this law in that if something is not proved true yet, another person does not have the right to voice by mass media an accusation which would hurt their reputation.

That's why journalist there use their wording carefully. "John Doe is alleged to have murdered so and so" vs. "John Doe was arrested because murdering so and so" before it is proven in the courts.

Yoon and Thanong have every right to call Thaksin a convicted fugitive from Thailand in newspapers and in public because it is a fact but they can not use their media outlets for blatantly accusing him of another crime which not yet convicted of.

Anuphong would have every right to sue Sondh L if Sondhi accused him in public of being on the payrol of Thaksin and Sondhi L would have every right to sue Anuphong if he accused him of embezzling the dontations to PAD from contributors.

This is slander and mud-slinging without proof to the extreme which should not be allowed by such well know public persons of position.

Now as for the new, younger generation of journalists you are talking about. They have nothing to fear if they did their job and find the facts and proof to support allegations they made which is why you rarely here of western news media being sued. They don't sit around coffee shops picking up on lastest gossip and print as facts before they check the sources and information first.

I was watching Channel 3 news this morning and it seems the rama 9 hospital & doctors have made a statement to the news that none of their doctors have flown to Dubai to treat Thaksin.

this could have been easily checked out by Yoon and Thanong with the resources availalbe to them.

I used to wonder why Thai politicians sued newspapers all the time.

I thought it was revenge or to silence enemies.

But, after reading The Nation and other outlets in the Thai media, I came to realize most Thai journalists don't have any professional integrity or ethics.

Considering Yoon is supposed to be one the preeminent journalists in the Thai media and he produces gossipy and libelous crap day after day, it isn't surprising Thai politicians are sue happy.

Plaadip date : 22/09/2009 time : 11.49

Sardine, they might be sued bu Thaksin because they are well-known journalists. Thaksin did it hundred times to crush his opponents. So anyway they are taking a risk which ordinary bloggers don't have to do, and if journalists are overanxious about those risks, as some younger columnists in the Nation usually are, the news will be boring. And who knows? They may turn out to be right finally as some of their speculative stuff did in the past.

They are not even 'tamadaa' journalists.

Hi all,

I'd just like to explain my position on this and why the strong words from me.

If it were anyone else such as expresso, ND, Ha-Ha who were posting this blog, I would not think it so offensive as we are regular people looking for truths in all the half truths out there.

But persons such as Thanong and Yoon have to accept higher standards as well known journalists and publishing on a blog owned/sponsored by the the same agency which they work for.

Please don't use the same excuse as Thanong saying that in this blog, he is just a normal blogger like the rest of us.

Both of you are suppose to be "journalists" and not gossipping street vendors in the fresh market. Also, you are both currently still holding the position of journalists and employed in this very newspaper sponsoring this Blog. "Nation Blog".

Opinion Article is one thing but gossip spreading is another, sir.
