If you are going to Beijing, don't forget to put on a mask...

The sky above Beijing today appears to have cleared up....after city authorities apparently used seeding technology to disperse the smog.

Chinese authorities say the smog isn't pullution, it's only mist. But some members of the US cycling squad arrived in the Chinese capital yesterday wearing black respiratory masks. Obviously, they are concerned about the reported air pollution level in Beijing. The International Olympics Committee (IOC) has said there is no cause for alarm.

to Yoon, you make me laugh, western country put their polluted industry in the low cost country like china and india, and then turn around to criticize those countries' pollution issue. the western country has finished industrial revolution, they have damaged the environment once. china and india should experience industrial revolution as well.

I don't deny the pollution and media censorship in china,As a developing country of 1.3B population we have come a long way, and the government has been working in resolving the remaining issues. But don't expect all of them to be fixed in in one day, one month or one year. I am just surprised too much of CNN/BBC influenced thai people.

Expresso, I actually have more friends of the "yellow race" than I do Caucasian, strangely none of them are yellow, some are whiter than me, others are various shades of coffee. The only truly yellow one I ever met was seriously ill.
I have never discriminated against anyone by race or colour, by creed yes, by behaviour yes. As to Chinese, I like them as a people, admire their abilities in certain areas, I find them friendly and open although with a few cultural quirks.
Some aspects of their government I loathe, and some I find good.
I would rather live in China than either America or Russia.

Yo, Ian, I only did my part claiming my right not to be discriminated since Lobo Tomy had called me a yellow race and a trinket selling Chinaman.

I have only learned from you that I feel I am not awarded equal right. As for insult that you said I have been looking for, perhaps you should start frankly instead of beating around the bush which, incidentally, has shown here and there nevertheless.

Is that a slur? The shops here are full of little chinese trinkets, if it is bright and plastic, one can pretty well be assured it will have 'made in China' stamped underneath it. Are you not proud that China has swamped the world with bright little trinkets. Sure a few get recalled because of health hazards, but others soon take their place.
You seem determined to look for insult
That is the attitude of a person who sees themself as inferior, as is the accusation that I see myself on a superior plateau.
I don't think it is me being naive, why should I have to hobble my speech for the sake of those who choose to misinterpret my remarks. I have never noticed you or Piset or the other western culture bashers do so. It takes two to tango and I have been dancing for many years, too late to learn new steps now just for the sake of your sensitive sensibilities

What's this: "little chinese trinket sellers"?

Not a racial slur?

Ian, c28, therein lies the naivety of you!

Most of the time, you don't take into account who the community members are. You speak your Brit way, thinking yourselves like higher beings, that other people know what you are saying; and when they don't, you would think you are on a higher plateau where, in fact, you guys are not!

Expresso, you just made a joke at yuri's expense, as a joke it was clever, if it hurt Yuri then he's thinner skinned than I judge him to be. Even so your intention was to hurt.

Now Yuri's comic posting you see as racial slur on Chinese, Africans or both. I see it as a charicature of two racial stereotypes, I think both an intelligent Chinese or African would find it funny.
I have heard both tell worse jokes about themselves. Is it because a westerner made the joke that you found it offensive?

Try an Indian forum, you will hear lots of jokes about the British, some are totally hilarious. You might regard them as slurs on my race, I just find them funny.

I guess it's all a question of sensitivities

Today's Beijing air pollution problem is Mao's work.
This uneducated communist peasant, built mushroom like factories around Beijing - so called 'village blast furnace'.
His summer playing ground is the beach city, Bai Dao, nearby Tien Jien Port. He prohibited any factories around it.

Originally this athlete entered for the 100 metres sprint. With the necessary protection he does not think he will do so well. It is possible he will now enter the swimming.

BEIJING (AP)—A group of American cyclists has apologized to Beijing Olympic organizers after arriving in China’s capital wearing face masks.

Michael Friedman, Sarah Hammer, Bobby Lea and Jennie Reed released a statement Wednesday, a day after they caused a stir by showing up in the protective gear.

“The wearing of protective masks upon our arrival into Beijing was strictly a precautionary measure we as athletes chose to take, and was in no way meant to serve as an environmental or political statement,” the athletes said. “We deeply regret the nature of our choices. Our decision was not intended to insult BOCOG or countless others who have put forth a tremendous amount of effort to improve the air quality in Beijing.”

The host city’s air remains a concern with the start of the games approaching. Beijing has put into effect long-planned pollution-control measures, such as taking cars off the streets, and American officials are cautiously optimistic.

Jim Scherr, the U.S. Olympic Committee’s chief executive officer, said his organization didn’t ask the cyclists to apologize.

“Those athletes regret that action and have written an apology to BOCOG on their own behalf,” Scherr said. “They now realize and understand how their actions were perceived by the host nation and by the organizing committee.”

Scherr said masks have been issued to national governing bodies that requested them.

“I understand that about 200 of our athletes received those masks through the national governing body, not directly from the U.S. Olympic Committee,” Scherr said. “Hopefully they won’t have to use them.”

The first time I visited Beijing I did not realise that it was surrounded by mountains, then one day it rained and afterwards I saw them.
I remember clearly the icy cold winds that howl around the buildings, cold even for an Englishman:-)

The latest news was that, the American cyclist who wore a mask, one of the 6 athletes who wore masks when they disembark from the plane, had posted a written statement of apology for causing such unnecessary scene, while he was only thinking about the best things for his health, that is, to be safe first.

Don't expect too much from Beijing. When I first visited Beijing some 20+ years ago the weather was like that, misty, dusty, polluted.

In those days, the city was still very simple and old fashioned, there were few private vehicles on the streets, most belongings to companies, government offices and state enterprises. But still you can see some level of pollution on the street level, not a much as today's levels.

I am glad I am not visiting Beijing anytime soon. There are bette places in China to visit, Olympics or no Olympics. It does not really matter to me.

All the flags in town look pretty exciting, and I hear that the Olympics will be broadcast on YouTube for those who don't have the necessary cable or satellite channels to view them. I too saw the article about these cyclists wearing masks in the airport in today's Daily Download on the Voice of America website.

Yoon:

Beijing is just to close to the desert area up north. Chinese government would have done much better holding the event in either Nanjing, Qingdao, or Shanghai. But, that is politics in China. In the beginning, there were no events being held in Shanghai at all because of the competition between Beijing and Shanghai, plus the recent falls from powr of the Shanghai Group in the top.

What worries me more is the possibilities of a Sand Storm. We have just had a Class 12 storm in Xinjiang about 3 days ago. This is a class equivalent to a strong typhoon. It caused 4 passenger trains to be delayed for having spent some time away from that storm to avoid problems.

Anyway, Having been to Beijing about 40 times in the past 17 years. I feel glad for the residents of Beijing that the hosting of the Summer Olympic has made the local and central grovernment become really forceful and effective in improving Bejing's environment. Despite a few hazy days now and then, Beijing people will enjoy much better air and water environment as a result of the Olympic.
