This can save a life: How to identify a stroke...

STROKE:  Remember The 1st Three Letters.... S.T.R

My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to
post it and spread the word. I agree.

If everyone can remember something this simple,
we could save some folks. Seriously..

Please read:

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall,
she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered
to call paramedics) .....she said she had just tripped
over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of
food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went
about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his
wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid
passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ.
Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke,
perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim
within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a
stroke... totally . He said the trick was getting a stroke
recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient
medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the
'3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The
stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when
people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke
by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to  TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE
(Coherently) i.e. It is   sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to  RAISE BOTH ARMS .

If he or she has trouble with   ANY ONE of these tasks,
call a doctor  immediately  and describe the

symptoms to him or her.

New Sign of a Stroke ------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another   'sign'   of a stroke is this: Ask the person
to   'stick'   out his tongue.. If the tongue is   'crooked',
if it goes to one side or the other
that is also an
indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this

e-mail sends it to
10 people; you can bet that
at least one life will be saved.

Interesting story and one to take seriously.
I don't think all Thai docs are crooks, I have had both prostate and gall bladder surgery here, without any complications and at a 'fair' price.

Sure, sometimes you gotta have a bit of faith - as they say 'a little knowledge is dangerous'.

I'm not worried about the doc - its the traffic

Ian/Catch,

Let me tell you guys a true story and it's my brother in law. He's got heart problem and he's 40 plus, he doesn't smoke nor drink, a healthy guy. It was last year when he came to stay with us for a while.

At first for the first few days, he claimed he had a sore throat and he just took some medicine hoping it will go away but it got worst, so we took him to the hospital in Ramkamheang and the doctor said he's getting a heart attack with the symtoms he described and suggested him to do the ECG (Some heart beat scan). MY brother in Law argue and said "I don't smoke or drink and I never had any problems in my life, how can I have a heart attack, I just have a sore throat, are you trying to make money off me?". He refused and walked out....In the middle of the night, he start feeling chest pain but it went away after a while. The next morning it came back again and he still didn't want to go see a doctor saying he don't trust them, he'll go check up when he gets back to the US. Later in the afternoon, it got worst and claimed he couldn't breath so we quickly took him to the hospital in Rama 9, at the reception, he describe his systoms to the nurse and the nurse put him on the wheel chair and took him to the emergency unit. The doctor came and said he's having a heart attack, gave him the Isordil (I think it's a relief of pain) and put everything he needed on him and sent him in to the ICU. The next day, he got 2 stent put in his heart and the doctor said he's lucky that the clogs is at the back of the heart and not the front otherwise he would have been dead by now but part of the tissue at the back of his heart is dead cause of the clog in his artillery.

And the problem is :

1) This guys thinks he knows everything and didn't believe the doctor in the first place.

2) He thinks the doctors in Thailand are all crooks and the ones in US is better.

3) We (as in I and my husband) have knowledge of none of what heart attack is like.

It is the time to think about this seriously.

Lalida, strangely enough, the most dangerous age for strokes and heart attacks is around 40 years old.

Fair enough - any information is better than none.

I have no problem about recognising the signs - that's useful for everyone. It's the getting hold of a specialist and cutting through the bureaucratic fear of waking a doctor up....oh and the traffic..... and getting an ambulance TO your house if need be.

Ian/Catch,

Regardless what falls afterwards or what could be done, isn't it better to know than not to know?

"Knock wood". what if it happens to you both (as you guys do reach to the age vulnerable to this kind of threats) and you wives or girlfriend know nothing about it? Will you not be at risk?

Ian - LOL

Catch - Yoon merely pasted this email which has been in circulation since eons ago. Anyway, it was a good reminder for me. I truly agree that you could only get an ambulance or police patrol within minutes in US. I once called the US cops and they came in less than 2 mins! I was shocked but happy instead.

If it happens at 2am in Chiangmai get ready to meet your maker. Nursing staff are terrified to bother specialists at that hour of the morning. You are more likely to be told to 'have a little sleep and you'll feel better'....not realising it might be your last!

Yoon, quote from reality not from places like USA where getting this done in three hours is possible.
God, you'll spend three hours in the Bangkok traffic getting to the hospital!!
