Maybe he should be tried for Treason

I understand the bit around Thaksin breaking the law.
The courts should have banned Thaksin right at the start when he concealed assets.

Then he should have gone through the ringer again re Temsek to see if he broke the law or just managed awayu around it.

Actually I disagree with the laws around politicians and company ownership. I have no problem with a poli having money or owning
business as long as they do their work for the people, and avoid conflicts of interest.

But the law is the law. So the courts may have failed in their duty.

However, I don't understand the bit around people not accepting leader staying in power when they win elections. There should be a cap on the number of terms (say 2) but this doesn't stop the Putin effect.

Thaksin wasn't really a dictator. He may have been manuvering to increase his influence and lessen effective opposition. I didn't like what he was doing. But I'm not sure anyone else will be better. And I believe a majority of Thai's voted for him. 3 times.

Unlike many out there, Mom Ui was raised a gentlemen, he was not ready to give his principle to become a thief.

Joking aside, in my humble opinion, ex-Gen. Sonthi Bunyaratakalin did the right thing in orchestrating the coup. There was no other way to get rid of the dictator Thaksin under the circumstances. Thaksin does not want to be prime minister for life. He was actually preparing himself to become the Emperor of the country forever!

What ex-Gen. Sonthi did wrong were the following:

(1) Announced that "free elections" will be held within one year of the coup. By doing that he had severely limited his options in choosing the right person to lead the government and the right team to clear up the mess left by the Thai Rak Thai scoundrels in the toppled government. He had also made it difficult for the "righteous" officials charged with investigating the alleged corruption and malfeasance to do a proper job with this time limitation.

(2) Selecting ex-Gen. Surayud for the prime minister's job. After knowing Surayud for so long it seems that he still does not know Surayud's personal character and work ethics, and that is really pathetic. If I were Surayud's boss I would have fired him after 30 to 60 days on the job seeing how bad a job he had been doing,

(3) Not forcing Thaksin and the other officials in his entourage to return to Thailand immediately after the coup. The government-owned airplane that flew thaksin to New York, and then to London later befor flying back to Bangkok should have returned to Bangkok immediately with all the thai officials on board. With Thaksin in country the new government can prosecute him more aggressively and effectively.

(4) Not purging the entire government machinery of Thaksin's people and symphatizers immediately after the coup. Without this action how can he expect to "clean the government house" effectively? That is why the new government faced obstructions and "gear wang" since day 1 whenever they tried to do the right things that needed to be doing.

(5) Appointing "Mom Ui" as the finance minister. "Mom Ui" is a Thaksin loyalist and cannot be expected to map the right economic course for the country. In his position he has be seen time after time again to be defending Thaksin. Didn;t he say that Thaksin's money are all still in-country because the Bank of Thailand had no records of Thaksin's money leaving the country? Since when does Thaksin have to get his approval to send money abroad? How many big bags stuffed with cash did Thaksin bring with him every time he travels abroad as the prime minister?

With all due respect to Abang, I think if he had a chance to do it again, he would:

(1) Marry 4 more wives,
(2) Play football more often,
(3) Make more money through corruption,
(4) Play more golf,
(5) Go to casinos in neighboring countries more often,
(6) Buy an expensive house in England or Wales,
(7) Enjoy himself thoroughly, and
(8) Say to heck with the Thai people because they dserve it!
