Toto-Chan, the little girl at the window

Do you have forever favorite book? One that you wanna read it never ending and wanna keep it on the shelves as your treasure. Not exaggerated, I do have one.

Toto-Chan, little girl at the window

Toto-Chan was a little Japanese girl living around pre or mid WW II in a middle class family.

The story started when the little girl was asked to remove from her first grade school becuz “her behavior bothers other students study,” said the despaired teacher.

So her mother had to find another school for her and what she worried about was not her child weird behavior but the school to suit her child. There were plenty of standardized schools in the country. But Toto-Chan was not a standardized student. She loved nature, loved animal, loved socializing, and loved life out side the window of classroom. Her wise mother knew it. And later she could find out a small school, out in Japan, where each student can choose its favorite class, shuffle daily time table, plus a small sight-seeing out side school if you finished all classes early.  And the school’s library was in old trains.

It was wonderful school for her. But not many students’s studying in this school becuz, surely, it was weird school for most parents. Indeed, the school president policy was not to object children nature, but to observe their nature and secretly try to help them learn about knowledge courses, nature, socializing and figure out what they really like since they was young. And the school was fun for children. I would love to study in this school as well (If there were a chance)

This is very nice way of education for the little child. Toto-Chan studied  in  the weird school, plus her mother understanding ; finally she became a Japanese successful super star, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi who wrote the story “Toto-Chan, the little girl at the window,” the semi autobiography of her life, first published in Japan in 1981.

Firs time I read this book was in 2003, almost 5 years ago. I found it out in my older cousin’s books piled in her room and read it 4 times. It was wonderful story; its lively illustration by Chihiro Iwasaki as well.

After getting into the university, I never found this book anywhere else, or indeed as my hard studying, I never had a chance to care for it.

Until now though the story is still in my head, I don’t own the book myself. This book is hard to find in modern book stores, even in the National Book Fair, I couldn’t find it. Tonight it pops up in my head. I wanna read it again; wanna keep it as my forever treasure. If you see it somewhere, please tell me……I’ll luv you everlasting….. (hehe)

naive, part 2? I never knew there it is. How come!! Must be interesting! What is the title? Toto-Chan, the little girl at the window II or another? Can you give me the book title, please?

It’s so beautiful story, right? so glad I found more people read the book. In the book, the part that the war begins and Toto-Chan had to leave her family was sad. War made children life blue.

goldfish, when you mentioned about Jane Eyre, you know it seems like I heard it somewhere. I kept thinking about it and just a few minutes ago I’ve got it! I heard this name from “Aviator” the film about Howard Hughes, the American aviator and film producer. And in the film his first girl friend was actress and she always wanted to star as “Jane Eyre”

Jane Eyre is a first-person narrative of the title character, a small, plain-faced, intelligent and honest English orphan. The novel goes through five distinct stages: Jane's childhood at Gateshead, where she is abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and role models but also suffers privations; her time as the governess of Thornfield Manor, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family at Marsh's End (or Moor House) and Morton, where her cold clergyman-cousin St John Rivers proposes to her; and her reunion with and marriage to her beloved Rochester at his house of Ferndean. Partly autobiographical, the novel abounds with social criticism and sinister gothic elements.

After research , now I know how much Jane Eyre famous was.

Now I got some new books to find, Quantum physics from GG and Jane Eyre from goldfish, and probably, Toto-Chan, the little girl at the window II from naïve.
Ahhh, hope these paper back are possible to find. TT^TT

Ahhhhhh……Venus, im crying in happy now. Finally, there is someone used to luv Toto-Chan like me TTTT^TTTT and surprisingly, you know I like the story of Sadako VERY MUCH. Once when I was a high school student, I even used the name, Sadako, for my icon on the Internet. It’s sad story, and above all, it’s true. I know Sadako cuz that time I luv “The ring” or “Ringuリング” a famous horror story among young written by Koji Suzuki and the main character of the Ring is a little girl named Sadako, whom the writer said he got inspiration for this character from a true story of a little Japanese girl named Sadako, who was ill cuz of the side effect of nuclear bomb, kept making origami up to thousand with belief it help her get release from the pain. GG, you know, Albert Eistein is one of my dream guys. he looks weird but if i met him i'd luv to listen he talk all day long. never read any physic books except it's about Eistein. Quantum physics, the title sounds hard to me. but it's a master peace recommened by GG, would be interesting. I'll go find if there is Thai version of the book.

Ninja: Quantum physics... yeah.. I love that stuff...

It changes how you look at the world completely. It's almost a philosophy, not quite a religion.

Very cool stuff.

Toto Chan was written by a Japanese author name Tetsuko Koruyanagi and this is a semi autobiography of her self when she was just a little girl with the nick name of Toto-Chan. The book recalls her memory in her extraordinary school Tomoe Gakuen elementary school just before the pacific war begun (The Atomic Bomb that falls in Japan).
Tomoe Gakuen was an elementary school headed by Sosaku Kobayashi who uses the Eurythmics method of teaching. He had gone to Europe twice to study the Eurythmics method of teaching music of Jaques-Dalcroze. He loves children and he started his school in six abandoned railroad cars in 1937 with a philosophy that the basic of education have to make the children feel happy and free, which is why in Tamoe Gakuen the children have freedom to pick which lesson they want to study first. All of the activity at school was design specially for each of their student.

Toto-Chan was a student with amazing energy that made her get in trouble even in the first week at first grade of her school life. Toto-Chan was drop out from her ordinary school because the teacher can not handle her. Fortunately for Toto-Chan she has an amazing mother who very wisely keeps the drop out issue as a secret from Toto Chan until she grown up in order to keep Toto Chan dignity and high self esteem.

Toto-Chan’s mother then sends her to Tomoe Gakuen elementary school that was held by Mr. Kobayashi. And all the adventure and lesson for Toto Chan live has just begun in the Tomoe Gakun. Firstly Toto Chan fell in love with the train coach that was use as the classroom then when she met Mr. Kobayashi she felt very comfortable talking to him and immedietlly feel close and a bond was made between them. Tomoe Gakuen made a deep impression in Toto Chan live. Unfortunately in the World War II, Tomoe Gakuen School was destroyed in the American bombing of Tokyo in 1945.

This book brings awareness to us that sometimes letting children to do what they want is a good way to learn for them too. An education should not make the children feel in a prison of mind. So if you are a parent or a teacher or someone who wants to know about child education I really recommend you to read “Toto Chan the Little Girl At the window”.

Toto-chan by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi in English costs 10.48 buck. Hmm….. never read the book in English version before. would be cool… Looking for the book at the used book store is brilliant idea. Anyhow thanks again for offering to help me.

Pasa - I would NEVER call you stupid and you know it. I can understand your reservations about buying stuff online, but maybe if you have a friend or relative that could help you once, you woud then have more confidence. However, more confidence is not the best thing as you may get the 'shopping online bug'. Have you checked eBay to see if someone might have a used copy? Sometimes Amazon have used copies or you can check Betterword Books who have a flat rate postage of $3-97 anywhere in the world. http://www.betterworldbooks.com/
I can ask around the used bookstores up here if you like and if I locate it would be happy to send it to you.
Whatever - good luck, it sounds special.

cath.....^^ Thank you so much. you know i keep looking the book on websites. a stupid thing is that i don't know how to buy stuffs online. I have two Debit card, but never use it and i'm afraid of mistake of the electronic card. .........stupid?

GG, you used to have it? is it fun? share it to me! for Totto-Chan, as you're daddy now, it's recommended! you'll know nature of children better and have a clue what to do with your child' learning when a specific situation occurs. it's not parents' guide book. it's much fun more than that.
