Thailand: Global Medical Hub

May 28-30, at Queen Sirikij National Convention Center,Thailand Center of Excellence for life Science (TCELS) took place Life Science, Life Quality or TCELS Day to show Thailand health science development for people care healthy life and medical businesses.

Also, the seminar on the issue “Global Medical Hub, Thailand is ready or not?” by Surapong Ambhanwong, Chief Medical and International Business officer.

Since 2004 Thailand boasts itself medical hub of Asia as its international medical staffs, the best service and care. And now Thailand, under the medical tourism program is ready for Global medical hub.

In 2007, the foreign patient influx is 1.4 million people (10.8%) and the amount of the Middle East patient is 152,360 (9.6%)  More than 30 countries worldwide patient comes to Thailand for medical tourism the program promoted via the office of Tourism Authority of Thailand 22 branches around the world since 1999.

“At first, Medical Tourism, the project, was originated to support foreign travelers become sick when they are during the trip in Thailand. But now, Thailand and the medical brand are so called. The best medical care and service as good as five stars hotel are available at reasonable price. Also they or its relatives can travel as well,” Surapong said.

At present, more than 16 hospitals, each takes care at least 10,000 (400,000Maximum) foreign patient yearly arriving Thailand as the well known medical tourism.  The nations come for medical treatment in Thailand are Japan, the US, Europe, the Middle East countries, Myanmar, Cambodia and etc, respectively.

Those hospital incomes can boost Thai economy as the chain suppliers. For the best quality, human resources and material supply; office supply, drug, medical supply, food and kitchen supply, transportation, linen and bed supply are necessary. Most of the supply is available in the country except 65 % of drug that has to be imported.

“The income of private hospital seems high for Thai people, but mostly money is distributed among Thai people due to chain supplies system. Hospital gets only 18 %,” said Surapong.

As the private hospital development has been supported and expanding.  Some people concerns that the high income could attract doctor and the problem lack of doctor in rural area would be worse.

But Surapong mentioned that as the criticism of the senate and the Medical Council of Thailand, doctors moved to Bangkok because of the uncomfortable things of rural and some face the problem; hard work and get a complain which might force them quite the job, while some come back to take care its family.

“It doesn’t because of private hospital. The government policy doesn’t hit the core of the problem,” Surapong said

At present, the high technology medical supplies imported but the low price of labor, Thai medical treatment is interesting as its cheaper prices, yet global standard. The medical tourism program can increase westerner and Middle East people influx, also decrease the number of brain drain (doctors and physicians).

PK…nice to have you here…sorry to hear about your fingers..really…

By the way, you left a cool comment.

I strongly agree with you that the country lacks doctors. Both rural and urban need more doctors. At now for Thailand, by average, 1 doctor / 3,600 patients, while in America, 1 doctor/ 800 patients. Nowhere have enough doctors indeed. That why doctor in poor country move to western nations.

It would be better if all of Thai doctors please to dedicate to Thai patient only. It would be great if doctors prefer to work anywhere in this country; isolated rural hospitals, villages on the mountains or hospitals far from their homes, etc. It would be best if doctors delight its salary and don’t move to the rich countries…….

The problem is less doctor do the thing I said above. And the problem is we can’t control them to do this and that. The goverment can’t even stop them moving to other country…….sad but true…

Hello Pasa. How're you doing? Thanks so much for visiting my blog.

About the global medical hub, I strongly disagree with this idea. I think we are not ready for that yet because we still do not have enough medical personals for our own citizens. I experienced by myself once, I could not get into the proper medical treatment in time that resulted to the control of my fingers. Now I cannot even write with a pen.

It seems like they all talked about the income and the profit. Some of them claimed that the money will return to help improving the better medical care for Thai people, but I don't believe that. While our citizens still have to travel 80km to wait in line for six hours for just to get a basic medical treatment, we should not use our "resources" for the maximum profit. The medical tourists come here to get cheaper medical care not because of the better one.

PJ, I understand what you said. As you said, some doctors callous disregard people life. Recently, even ‘a right to die’ bill urged and supported by doctors set to become law.

Anyhow, I can’t assume that all of them, or most of them, or figure how many of them share the same stereotype absolutely thinking that life linked to karma.

Ian, why the government urges private hospital charge tourist more? As Chief Medical and International Business officer said they proud of its cheaper price.

For the Eastern hospitals, they offer clients the best…yes, I believe they can. But if you notice the number of Thai hospital patient, you’ll see that UK and the US is not the main target, Middle East patient is 152,360 (9.6%) instead the big target one and its influx tend to be higher because Middle East terrorist image is quite strong for Europe people, so the way those are treated is not as preferable as by Asian.

For the medical treatment quality, Thailand can compete with world and Malaysian and Singapore vividly. The first Asian hospital in accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI), the no-profit USA private organization aim to improve the safety and quality of care in the international community through the provision of education and consultation services and international accreditation, is Thai private hospital, Bumrungrad. And Lead Thai Hospitals; Simitivej and Bangkok hospital got JCI accretion as well. The one advantage make Thai superior is Culture and tourist management and its human resources. Once Singapore hospital trained its staffs to smile like Thai staffs, but it is hard to change people personalities.

I am not saying that Thai hospital is the best, but in the current world medical market, some world citizen eye on this nation as its way for trustful medical treatment.

Pan, as my expereince, a natural delivery package cost about 40,000 Bht. But for others kinds of delivery, the cost could be higher.

OK Pasa,

While I think Thai nurses are very caring and provide good service, I have a sense from farang friends that Thai doctors lack empathy. They are very skilled and many of them have studied abroad, notably the US and UK. But they can often seem to have a particularly Buddhist approach to medicine which can appear to farangs as uncaring.

It's like any illness that has befallen the patient must in some way be linked to karma. So for example 'oh, so you have cancer, you must have done something bad in a previous life. Good luck in your next life, you may well be a frog.'

Can you see what I am getting at?

A recent article in the Nation claimed the government wants the private hospitals to charge foreign tourists more, the two tier system again.
I am sure the Malaysian and Singapore governments were delighted to read this
Why does Thailand always seek to overmilk the cow?
Do they know that Eastern Europe has also discovered this market, both Hungary and Romania are offering packaged medical deals at better prices, simply because the travel costs are so much less. An added bonus is that the English language is spoken by many.

PJ-Bumrungrad is quite expensive without reasons. I've few international moms who tells me that they have many miscellanous expenses, like 5 times more than other private hospitals. Recently, my kid's teacher is deciding whether to deliver her baby. After some research, given the same services, Bumrungrad will cost her more than 100,000 bht, and Bangkok Christian will cost her more than half of that price.

PJ, anyhow, the UK nurse and medical treatment should have its good side. I never experience western hospital...but you do...PJ, as your experience, can you compare the positive and negative point of Thai hospital and its service between Thailand and the western (that you know). It would be good if we know there is something to improve. Western hospital must have its best way. And Thai hospital must have its imperfect way anyhow.

Pasa,

Yes I agree with you completely. I think Thais are naturally more caring as nurses and so give a very good service, in my experience. I recall my mother's admittance to a hospital in the UK earlier this year and how inattentive and uncaring the English nurses were in comparison...

PJ, Burmrungrad has Mc Donal too. I love it! Au Bon Pain is terrible expensive.
By the way, your mom must have a reason to stay in UK. anyhow, I am sure, for the service, Thai staff can do it better. or what do you think?

Good subject Pasa. When my mum got sick I really wanted to bring her to Thailand for treatment, although in the end she decided to stay in the UK. I know certainly that Burmrungrad has excellent facilities plus it has Starbucks and Au Bon Pain! :-)

I might suggest you change the title to Thailand: global hub for medical tourism. Might give the reader a better gist of what it is about.
