The World Can Wait, But Burma Cant Wait

What is happening in Burma is  the ugliest disaster relief  works in human history.

What’s wrong with Burma and with the world?

It has been 25 days since one of the worst disasters in Asia history has happened in Burma.

But nobody knows exact figure of  the affect and  the scale of actual damages in cyclone hit area in Burma. Not any organization, governments, NGOs, or even UN couldn’t come up with useful and clear stats data and any clear plan  to save people lives. There is no visibility even for another one week .

My utmost respect and thankfulness to many NGOs, UN, Redcross organizations and many heroes who are working and sacrificing their lives in the field to save millions of victims under extremely difficult situation in Burma right now.

But I can’t stop thinking of  my frustration for  all slow  and uneffective actions and responses from the all the rich and developed countries.

I wonder if we are really living in 21st century civilized world where human conquer all the challenges against them by their knowledge, knowhow, science and technology. If it is true, it is not happening in Burma.

Where are effectiveness of those  rich and developed countries? Where is their effective and quick action to saving lives?  Is geo-politics an important factor in their formula for calculating value of differences in human life.

Let me understand.

This is election year in US. Wounded by Iraq war, sky rocketing oil prices, fore closure houses and  troubles in housing sectors , volatile financial and stock markets, looming economy ,fear of recessions  and all uncertainties at home  make US government to stop any decisive and effective action to help disasters victims in Burma  even though the actions are morally justifiable in the humanitarian background.

Nobody in Washington wants to see any complication by helping the dying suffering people in Burma. For them It is not worth to do it.

Yes people in the white house and capitol hill do believe that “ all men are created equal ” only when they are direct benefit to the US.

But Burma is not in their list. So the world super power failed to do its effective help and supports to save tens of thousands of suffering women and children in delta region of Burma until now.

EU countries including UK follows the same reasons. No one want to mess up with China without Washington's supports or approval.  None of EU countries is dare to confront with another silent regime supporter; Russia which is virtually holding the most effective economic weapon in Europe; Oil and Gas supply.

Only France was dare to said the loudest voices amid the emergency humanitarian needs in Burma. But those words also disappeared in the air.

China, meantime may be cautiously and quietly smiling by knowing  that  its own game plan always works in Burma by the cost of  blood, sweet and tears of millions of Burmese lives. The deeper Burma is in its own poverty, the more it will rely on China  politically and economically. Ties between Burma and the West will be far apart over the time. That is exactly what China wants. China do not even want to see  any westerners come and station on Burma soil for a  period of time no matter what reasons even if they are coming as rescue mission and to save people lives..

UN has its own role to play and it is doing its best in the midst of disaster. But  the world body does not have any miracle to change things especially in Burma where all of its power are dissipated by power balance between West and China Russia.

ASEAN as usual, with very weak in economic and political power couldn’t do any effective help to save the victims in Burma. They want to help Burma. But they don’t know how to do . Most ASEAN member countries have their own internal  problems at home either economically, politically or both. Its so called non-interference policy means they will not mess with Burma even though millions are negelected and dying.

India, always trying to get the best out of Burma will play as smart as usual. They don’t want China to be Burma’s only partner. After all Burma is between them and China and they want a piece of it.

I feel ashame and gulity to myself even I am able to write about people lives by sitting here in cold blood.

Come on the wold !!! we are talking about saving lives. They are human like me and you. Those hungry children sitting under the rain are like mine and yours and our neighbours!! Why the world can't do better than this?

The root cause for all slow disasters relief works, tragedy of unnecessarily losses of lives and suffering  is Military Government of Burma or  Regime itself..

But China and Russia are the most accountable for consistantly blocking all potential chances of political ,social and economic reform in Burma by abusing their vetos at UNSC resolutions and pushing the country into this dangerous level of poverty and isolation.

And US and EU are accountable too for too eager and over ambitious to force to implement a democratic free Burma.Their policy of economic sanction and embargo in Burma is nothing but a total failure. It does not hurt Burma Military Generals and their governance in any big impact. Military regime will always survive as long as they have gun in their hand in Burma. They  will always get support from China, Russia or even India anyway. The hostile approach of the West just  push the regime to further the the edge towards China and it created an extreme paranoid xenophobic isolated Burma.

Sanctions only hurt ordinary people from all walks of life and it is counter productive in Burma. As the consequences, majority of  people are barely survived. It is their sanction that push ordinary people, median class, small business owners and many others  to the edge for their day to day survival. It is economic and social hardship that push hundreds of  thousands of people to join regime’s civilian thug USDA and militia Swan Arr Shin  groups which are becoming important civilian mechanism of military government in Burma.

Generals in Burma are so dumb to be smart or so smart to be dumb for their own survival and they will do whatever it may cost to protect the country and Army (Tatmadaw). It  is very first and basic priority of the military agenda and  philosophy in Burma. This strong belief  has already embedded inside the heart and mind of every old and  new generals and  every military officers.

Shockingly to most of us, it has become a political culture in Burma. It has formed as a socio-culture pattern and become a “System” in Burma.

All anti-junta  forces; NLD, many different prodemocracy activists groups, ethnic groups inside and outside Burma are not strong enough and not united among themself to overcome  “ the forces of System” inside Burma.

Even the  most respectful and big organization of  Buddhist monks ( Sangha) in Burma is  being a part of “ the System”.

Political situation in Burma will always be a mess by its own and by external  power players effects. It will take many decades to sort out differences among all groups and improve socio-culture in Burma. And it will not happen any near future.

But no matter what happen in Burma, we all can still save lives. We can help to improve people lives there if we respect our own human dignity and we are willing to do so.

Natural disasters are unavoidable for mankind. But with Technology and human knowledge, And most importantly, willingness to take moral responsibility, the world can save many lives in Burma. It is never too late to save people lives.

Even though almost one month after  the disaster in Burma, 1.5 millions people are living unimaginable worse condition of one’s life. The supports that the  cyclone victims received from the world are too little, too slow and inadequate in everyway.

We need the world to really stand up by Burma with effective action, willingness, sincerity with brave decisive heart.

May be the world can wait. But people in Burma can’t wait any longer. Because they are starving and dying.

I pray that all the necessary helps may come on time to the suffering people in Burma.

The junta might have thought that it is necessary to fasten the security while many intl aids workers are entering into the country.

Personally I believe Aung San Su Kyu is not the solution that many believe, in view of their history, multiple ethnities and their non-conformity nature and the Burman hegemony.

Outcry on Sookyu will be no resonance.
Burman citizen must, just concentrate on the relief works, that will unthread the thread little by little.

Very emotional and very true, but I don't think anyone wants to risk a war between the major powers and this could be the end result of direct intervention by the West.
This disaster is in Asia's back yard and somehow Asia has to sort it out.
