Loss of face

I've been smoking too much, and I wanted to cut down on my consumption.

So I stayed off of it for a week, and this is what happened.

For some unexplained reason, I thought I needed a new car, so I went to buy a new car, only to realize, I had no money to buy a new car.

-___-,,,

I went to take a look at it, tried it out, and even placed an order for it, and the last thing I did was to see if I could afford it.

And guess what.

I couldn't afford it.

Now, having talked to the sales lady so intensively about buying the car, I had to do a lot of damage control after finding out that I couldn't actually buy the car...

Imagine the loss of face... Well, I didn't feel too embarrassed about it... I'm too 'thick faced' to be embarrased about such small thing..

But it was a very strange week...

Now I'm back to my normal smoking habit. Not too much, but not going cold turkey either. Just enough to stop me from running to a car dealer everytime I see a nice car.

One of my first jobs was selling Chryslers right in the early 80's, US car slump.
We called people like you " Be backs," 'cause although you meant to buy and meant to " Be back," you just never would.

I recommend you stop buying cigarettes with added nicotine and chemicals, you'll naturally cut down with an all natural tobacco product.
Then,, get a prescription for Wellbutrin ( that will curb all your compulsions) cut down cigs by half for a week- to 10 a day for a week-, 5 a day for a week. All the while try to change smoking habits , wait 15 minutes after meals , etc. Get down to 2 cigarettes for a few days and then pick a day and quit.
Mostly, you have to really, really want to stop.

Cho, i lost my face a long time ago. And speaking of buying cars that one can not afford, i just did that like 5 days ago. I traded a VW Jetta for a Jeep Grand Cherakee Laredo (19000 to over 36,000) and i could not afford it before (but i figure once the deployment orders come, i can just turn the car back in). My wife did not want the "small" car, so i got the "big" car for her.

I lost my face when I was 25 years old and my waist when I was 30 years old.
Everything has been a loss or a gain ever since!

Polarmouse : I like your name. PolarMOUSE... lol...

"...but looking at goods in a store and pretending I want to buy..."

Why would anyone 'pretend to want to buy something'?

If I pretended I wanted to buy the car, then I woulnd't lose my face coz why would I? I was just pretending anyway...

But in this case, or in any other case when I lose my face, I wasn't pretending, I was dead serious.

You live so far up north!! Must be freezing right now!

Catch : I had EVERY intention to ACTUALLY BUY the car. I wasn't there just to 'try it out', I wanted to take the car home with me.

And I actually told the sales lady that I was going to buy the car.

--------------------------------

GG : (walking into the showroom) Hi. How much is that car?

Sales : (Pointing to the car) This one?

GG : Yeah that one. How much is it, and how soon can I have it?

Sales : It's xxxxxxx Baht, and you can have it in two months.

GG : Too slow. I want it within this week!

------------------------

Those were almost exact words I said. I gave them the impression, that I was going to drop a pile of cash on the table and take the car that day.

I don't know what the hell was wrong with me that day.

What the hell was I thinking???

C5: GG, you would probably be right...
I live in a culture where loss of face as a concept does not really exist, at least not in this way.
I might negate my honour by behaving dishonourably, for instance damage someone else or their property and refuse to make amends, but looking at goods in a store and pretending I want to buy, and then backing out at the last moment - that is quite usual around here. (approx. 60 deg N, 5 deg E)
So in sum - I agree with catch22

GG - I've taken several very high priced cars that I never intended to buy out for a test drive......never lost face once and the salesmen still think I'm making up my mind.
You lost face because you didn't go far enough.....you need to have the balls to go almost to the point of signing on the dotted line and then..........just smile and say "I need more time to choose between this and the Merc - I'll be in touch".........believe me you won't lose face and another smarmy car salesmen hits the dust.

Polarmouse : If I didn't know you any better, reading your words, I would say you are 'thick faced'. :-)

How did I lose my face?

I talked to the sales lady as if I was gonna buy it right away. (I was talking as if I had money.)

So I get a lot of courtesy from them. (So they were nice to me coz they thought I had money.)

But I couldn't do my end of the deal, coz I HAD NO MONEY. (So they were like, what the fk is this guy?!)

So that's where and how I lost my face.

Understand?

No?

Try it.

If you want to know how it feels to 'lose face', goto a nearest car dealer, and act as if you're gonna buy a car right away, and when it come to time to pay up, you say,

"Sorry. I have no money."

And walk out.

The feeling you get from doing the above excercise should teach you how it feels to lose face.

I do not understand this "lose face" - whatever I do my face is in the same place - it covers the front of my head.
I may look embarassed or foolish, but there is nothing special in that - it is a rather frequent occurrence.

I have never felt losing face when I can´t do anything or do sth. wrong. I can accept it easily and even regard this as a kind of braveness. I think men have more problems in this case.
BTW, regarding smoking, I have sth. to tell you.
My mother in law smoked for some 50 years and she never thought about giving it up.
One day, she was rushed to the hospital because she hardly breathed. The doctor told her that she was dying.
Right after that, she could stop smoking and she still lives until now (although not very healthy).

I hope you don´t need that doctor to tell you that sentence.
At least, please do not smoke when the children are near you. Sorry that I interfere your private life.
I just like you and your family too much, esp. the little princes.

such as incorrect spelling, but i get over it, What you you doing was window shopping, or price comparison research. Why would you settle on a purchase with the first salesman without talking with another, This must be a asian thing, I know my wife doesn't just like to window shop, I don't understand
