Can a virgin woman get pregnant?

This morning, while taking a shower to goto work, something made me think of old sayings that were in line with this:

"There's no smoke without fire."

And I was thinking, yeah... how can there be smoke when there's no fire?

And while staring at my Korean face while brushing my teeth, I remembered a Korean proverbs, which carried a similar meaning,

"How can there be smoke from the chimney, when there is no fire in the furnace?"

Not that it meant anything in particular, but it was just a chain of thoughts I was having while showering and brushing my teeth.

And when I was putting my clothes on, I remembered another one with the same theme,

"How can a virgin get pregnant?"

And then it hit me.

Is it medically, scientifically, or even theoretically possible that a virgin woman will get pregnant?

If she's a virgin, that means she had never had sexual intercourse with a man, therefore how can she get pregnant?

I wasn't thinking of any virgin, but the most famous virgin of all, Virgin Mary.

The Bible says she got preganant just like that, but is that even religiously possible???

Sometimes I like to think of biblical characters like Noah or Jesus as a real historic figure. A person who really existed in our past, not just a fictional character.

May be what they did or how they did things were made up, but I like to believe that their existance was real. That they were real people, just like you or me.

So, is it anyway possible that Mary got pregnant WHILE being a virgin?

Khun Pan, you're so accurate that Uncle Ian is also a Sex Doctor too. What he said made sense to me. So many young ladies who were active in gymnastic and high jumps often tore their hymens before high school. They were often worried sick being labeled as non virgins by their husbands. Sounds unfair.

Ian, Have you ever read a chinese novel, the Condor hero. There is a man who could walk on the water (there were piers under water!).

Actually Jesus walked on ICE. The lake was frozen with thin ice, but it was dark so they didn't see the ice...

Tow, in the sea of Galilee there are many jettys which have sunk beneath the surface, local people who know where they are can walk out to sea along these sunken piers and appear to be walking on water.

In the Greek version of the Bible. It is translated to young woman, not virgin.

GG, it depends upon definitions, in the Bible the true meaning of virgin (virgo) was simply a maiden, a young woman.
In modern parlance a virgin is a woman who has not had penetrative intercourse. Medically it might be seen as a girl with an intact hymen.
The problem when defined as having an intact hymen is the it is very common for the hymen not to be intact, even from birth:-)
http://www.livestrong.com/article/12449-female-hymen/
If we now consider virgin birth, this is actually quite common. If a couple are having non penetrative sex, and the woman is producing copious vaginal fluid, then if the man ejaculates onto the outside of the vagina, it is the nature of sperm to swim towards their target. An extra couple of inches added to their journey is no great problem:-)
In fact mammals are the only animals that actually inject the sperm into the female, birds, amphibians etc just deposit it outside the female entrance (cloacha) and trust that the sperm will find its target.
Looking around us, it obviously does.
This of course is another reason why the withdrawal method of contraception (coitus interuptus) is not very reliable.
