Yuk! It's a cup of coffee!

I put 1 spoon of coffee powder (Nescafe), 2 spoons of sugar and pour 4/5 cup of hot water into the coffee cup. (Not a mug) Then I add 2 spoons of coffee mate (powder milk).

And I stir it until all the sugar has dissolved, and I sip it, and I go,

"Yuk!!"

It tastes terrible!!

It tastes like burnt toast... it tastes like the black thing you scrap off the bottom of a fry pan...

And it even smells terrible...

It smells like burnt match stick... it smells like someone had collected the black stuff from the exhaust pipe of a truck and boiling it in a thick motor oil...

It's just a bad cup of coffee...

Is it the coffee or me? Why is it that when I make a cup of coffee, it always taste so bad? What am I doing wrong? What am I missing here?

Can somebody help me on how to make a good smelling, tasty cup of coffee?

Also Coffee Alley Sukumvit Soi 16 - just up from foodland

Free wireless and cheaper than SB and nice little garden.

And I have no commercial interest in it, unfortunately. There could be a wave of independant coffee places sprout up now that SB and others have started a little coffee culture.

French press - any decent Italian coffee or Suzuki.
I never go to SB back home. It's for kids.
Less options here.
And damn it, the coffee is okay. Prefer there filter blends as the expresso is a bit bitter for me.

I absolutely LOVE Starbucks.

And yes, GGrass, you can get high from coffee. All the caffeine gets to head and hypes you up. That's why people drink it first thing in the morning, for an instant rush.

Can you get 'high' from drinking coffee?

I drank 'espresso' from one of the Italian restaurant after a meal, and I was high all afternoon... dizzy... head spinning, and my mind was spinning so fast...

I had one of those thick slimy coffee before. I got shaky hands even before I finished the cup. Terrible... My stomach was turning and I couldn't focus my eyes. I enjoyed it while drinking it though... It's the after-effect that kills me.

Turkish coffee, very black, thick, strong and sweet.
Standard test, stand your spoon upright in the cup, if it falls over it is not strong or sweet enough.

Pomjuk: If you like NY style coffee, you are going to love Korean style coffee. Mild... good aroma... thin... you can almost see the bottom of your cup.

Tastes better with one sugar and no milk.

That’s how pple in Seattle drink their coffee strong and burn. It tests like my morning coffee after sitting on the warmer for 2 hours. Like most pple in NY, I like my coffee regular (NY term for coffee with milk and sugar) and lighter.

When I buy a cup from Starbucks, which is once in a blue moon, I get a dilehma when they ask,

"Do you want to add whip cream?"

because my mind is going,

"It's damn expensive already, and if I add whip cream, it'd be even MORE expensive! But without the whip cream, it doens't taste as good! What shall I do??"

Well, if you can find a way to convert the middle easterners from drinking the black tea with baklava to Starbucks coffee with Dunkin donuts that will reduce the trade deficit dramatically.

Ian: I use bottled water. I always use bottled water, coz if you use the tap water, you get white powders in the coffee pot.

Naive: Salty coffee!! I gotta try that one... just to see what you had to drink!

Ian - Very excellent question on water usage. I agree that bottled water esp the Mineral Water is the best to make aromatic coffee. I often found funny tasting coffee in rural areas of Thailand where they either used boiled well or rain water. In case any mosquitoes had laid eggs, it should be called Coffee Larvae.

GG, I have had a thought, when I first started living here my coffee always tasted disgusting, sort of stagnant.
One day they temporarily shut down the water supply so I made my coffee with bottled water, it was excellent. The difference in taste was unbelievable.
What water do you use?

Pomjuk - I thought of rearing these animals myself since the Mongoose is not so costly. It's their doppings that cost a bomb! Let me know the taste once you have tried it. I agree that Kona Coffee is excellent too.

Where is Pansalwaycute - the coffee queen? No news and no Heeeee from her lately.

When I was still in college, visiting home for the summer or Christmas, I usually brought my own bag of freshly grounded coffee. I couldn’t stand drinking the instant coffee with that Coffee-Mate garbage.

Good coffee is Kona coffee from Hawaii. It costs a dime per coffee bean, so think how many beans there are in a one-pound bag. The most expensive coffee is from Indonesia. They pick the coffee beans from mongoose droppings, it costs $500-$600 a pound (I’ve never tried that myself). The French way of making coffee is also good with half hot milk and half French roast, or the Italian ways such as cappuccino, café latte or straight up espresso with Sambuca etc.

A good coffee; my man; should be drunk with hot milk, half-and-half or heavy cream, not coffee-mate.

And be careful taking advise from these British bloggers, they’re tea drinkers not coffee drinker.

Yes Gold Blend is the stuff to use, standard Nescafe is almost as bitter as Starbucks. Either use condensed milk or coffeemate plus normal milk.
Coffeemate alone contain no fats, essential to give that rich creamy taste to the coffee.

Earlsy: I can't even get it right with decaf...

If I ever buy a coffee making machine, it'd have to be one of these ones... the ones you make coffee with coins.

GG, Try real ground coffee made in a cappuccino maker. You don't need to buy really expensive coffee. The brand I use is Giovanni arabica. It tastes every bit as good as Starbucks to me!!

Brembo: A ha...

I did put 1 spoon of coffee and 2 spoon of coffee mate... but I'm wondering if it's the amount of water I poured. How much CC of water should I put for 1 spoon of coffee?

Hey brembo is expert in coffee and Chinese tea drinking. You just need 1 teaspoon of Nescafe and 2 tablespoon of Mali Condensed Milk to make a perfect cuppa. Coffee mate is not fragrant but a substitute & convenient milk. It would be better you drink Nescafe Gold Blend and its aroma will send you to heavens I learnt a lot by entering the kitchens & trash area of hotels and cafes to see the ingredient brands used
