Racist remark from a Nigerian

You hear about food shortage in certain parts of the world, but you will never know what it's about unless you are actually in that part of the world...

It's a sad thing... to be hungry? To not have anything to eat? To not have enough food for all of your family members?

We take it for granted... We have SO MUCH FOOD available for us... We waste so much food... Our fridge is FILLED with food... some of the food that's in our fridge never get to see the light of the day and end up in garbage because we had TOO MUCH food...

Here, food is rare. I'm in a hotel, so I can order food from my room, but once you step outside of the hotel, food is next to gold. And the food they sell in shops or restaurants are WAY out of people's reach.

Words cannot express the feeling I get regarding this matter...

The food I've been eating were not the kind of food I was used to... So I couldn't eat too much of it, even when I was hungry. Not that they didn't taste so good, actually the food was OK... I guess I wasn't hungry enough...

Yesterday, I was hungry and I wanted to eat until I was full. So I entered a 'Chinese Restaurant' inside the hotel... The food was VERY expensive.

A piece of fried chicken, half the size of usual piece from KFC costs 100 Baht, and a bowl of fried rice costs more than 150 Baht...

But I got a real interesting information from this Chinese restaurant. It was about African's racism.

The below was the conversation I had with the Nigerian waiter.

Waiter : (not smiling at all) How are you sir?

GG: (Smiling) Fine. How are you?

Waiter : (still not smiling) Fine. What would you like to have?

GG: Let's see...

The menu was in Chinese and English. The food description in English didn't make much sense, as it is in any Chinese restaurant. So I asked some questions to the waiter, and the waiter helped me out. It took me some time to choose what to eat.

Waiter : (curious look) Are you a China man?

GG: No. I'm not.

Waiter : (Smiling wide) I thought so... I like the way you speak.

GG: What do you mean?

Waiter: (Smiling) The way you speak. It makes me like you.

GG: China man don't speak like me?

Waiter : (Making a disgusted face) No.

GG: You don't like China man?

Waiter : (Solemnly) They are not humans.

GG: (Nodding my head) Ah ha...

Through conversation with various people around the hotel, I've learned that the Nigerians are not very fond of the Chinese. They don't like Chinese and Indians, and they show their dislike quite openly.

This explains some of the hostility I feel from some of the Nigerians I've encountered. But everyone changed their attitude once they knew I was from Korea. The conversation with the waiter in the Chinese restaurant confirmed my suspicion that they might have some bad feeling towards the Chinese.

But to hear such remark, that they are not humans, was a bit too strong for me.

No time. Gotta go now.

In Latin America, any northeastern Asians were called, Cino (man) and Cina (woman) in the past.
Today, Haponese (Japanese) and Core (Korean) are well distinquished, from Cino.

You know why ?.
They are well heeled, especially in the highend clubs and golf links, with hefty tippings.

Behind the waiter, the owner of the restaurant, Chinese, was sitting on a table reading a newspaper. The waiter made a motion, suggesting to the China man, and made the face, which seemed to say,

"Can't you see? THAT's why we don't like Chinese."

The Nigerians must've seen something in Chinese, that I haven't seen.

I did ask him WHY, but he looked at me with a face which seemed to say,

"Isn't it obvious?"

Best way is to eat and don’t leave any tip and if you’re asked you just say “We subhuman do not tip”. I did that once in NYC’s little Italy to an (fresh off the plane) Italian waiter with an attitude the guy went quite.

And you think you are sheltered from not holding a Chinese passport, do you? I find that offensive without having to hold any of the Chinese, Hong Kong, Taiwanese etc. passport. I would have asked to speak to the manager, request another waiter or just walk out and find another restaurant.

I find it strange that anyone could think GG was Chinese. First of he is very tall, he does not have Chinese features, and his hair is not straight.
Actually if I met him as a stranger I would have a problem defining his race:-) People have a similar problem with me, many at first sight think I am Chinese or Tibetan:-)

I wonder what prompted that remark? When one experiences Black vs. Black racism you will understand what a ridiculous PC concept racism is; did you ask the waiter WHY he thought Chinese not human?

I'm usually mistaken for Thai.
And when Thais realize I don't speak a word of it, they usually look really disappointed to the point of irritation. Sigh.
