I mean I write about... well, just about everything. So why shouldn't I write about my new 'fling'?

I have a date this lunch. And I'm all fired up for it! Ooh... I can't wait till it's noon...

I'm meeting my new life partner, my new buddy... It'll be the day I meet my 'Dream Driver'.

No. I'm not talking about a person who drives a car.

I'm talking about THIS!

It needs no introduction, it needs no description. It's an R5.

I'll be trying this baby this afternoon, and if I like it, I can have it for FREE!

Now, tell me if 3,500 Baht for this beautiful piece of equipment isn't considered FREE!!!

Ooh... I'll tell you all about it when I return...  :-)

Phantom: Just checking. Cool dude, you're alright. Sorry for my sudden burst of 'the dark side'...

Actually, yeah... it is a bit like pissing contest, where you go, 'who can piss the farthest' with a golf ball. The older ones don't piss as far as the younger ones, so they constantly upgrade their d@@k to make it piss further.

I guess we're all dogs afterall...

"Jai yen yen," Khun G Grass. I did not bring my lawnmower today so don't get too excited. Also, there are no "nangsao sue sue" around here.

Actually, my remarks were meant as a joke and was in reaction to the way you titled your blog. Nothing personal. You should be laughing instead of frowning and crying. Smile and the whole world smiles with you!

Why do they call it graphite when in fact it is carbon fibre, a completely different polymer of carbon?

Zohak: r7 huh... yeah... that's a beauty... It's like BMW 7 series... r5 is the 5 series... hehehehe..

I assume you are getting older... if you are thinking about graphite, let me be the first to STOP you.

Don't change to graphite, when you have steel!

If you were just beginning to play golf at old age, yeah, graphite is the better option, but you already know how to play golf with steel shaft! So stick to the old X19... I hear X19 is the most forgiving clubs in the market... I don't know if it's true, but if they dare to say things like that, it has to be true.

I had my club speed measured once, but I don't remember the numbers. All I know is, the guy who was measuring it thought there was something wrong with the equipment coz the number came out too high.

I'm not bragging, as high club speed isn't necessarily a good thing, as i'm sure you already know. It's too fast.... Hitting the ball 300 yds has no merits except in a long drive contest.

I would like to hit around 260 yds, consistantly in the fairway. Every golfer's dream...

Phantom (wt?): Hey, scary dude,

Am I supposed to laugh at your comment or what? If you like reading about sexy foxies, try Lalida's blogs. It's usually about prostitutes and stuff. You might find it more interesting.

And if you like talking about size of your dick, try Viagra.com and tell them how viagra helped you realize your potential. I'm sure they'll be more keen to listen.

Gee whiz GGrass. I thought you were getting excited over some nice looking lass. Heck my shaft is stiffer than your new driver. It's a lot shorter but it has a head that will really excite the opposite sex. And boy oh boy, it has a diameter that is many times bigger than yours. Care to give it a try in your favorite hunting ground?

GG this is a nice driver!

I have an R7 which I love, mine is 9 degrees but I have a stiff shaft .

Have you had your swing speed meassured?? it is worth doing, especially as you are using a serious piece of kit (9 degrees should be low to mid handicapper!)

With my irons my swing speed is around 115 mph and with my driver it is up around 125-130.

I have Calaway X19 pro irons but decided to stick with the Steel shafts rather graphite.

A FADE shot is when the ball moves from left to right. A DRAW shot is the opposite... moving from right to left.

hm... I'm going to write a blog on this...

Ian: the screws actually do what it's supposed to do... make the driver a draw oriented, or a fade oriented.

Ok, I just got back from the driving range WITH the new driver!! Yo hoo!!

I wrote a long review of it just now, but it got timed out... If it was about anything else, I'll just forget about it, but since it's about golf, I can write and rewrite as many times as I need!

Anyway, it's Taylormade r5 (Max), N, SR shaft, with 9 deg face. oh, 460 CC I think...

It's still very new, although the previous owner had re-sprayed the head himself. The paint job wasn't so good, but pretty drivers aren't necessarily a good driver...

I immediately hit some balls with it, and I found it a bit difficult at first... I couldn't find the right tempo... sometimes too fast, sometimes too slow...

I would pull it to the left, and next I would push it out way to the right... But after a tray of golf balls, I got the swing of it. I managed to hit 10 balls at 250 yards mark consistantly. I think that's a pretty good result, coming from a driver I've never used before.

The sound it makes is also very impressive... It's not a loud BANG like a Callaway, and it's not a sweet PING like the PING. But it's more of a cracking sound, sweet nevertheless.

Previously I had a Katana, but I cracked the head... I know it's pretty hard to crack a driver head, but I'm a hard hitter... The old driver used to have the stiffest shaft in the world, almost like a steel pipe. So my swing was power swing, using a lot of arms. But this new driver is a bit softer than the old one, so it requires smoother swing.

I think it's going to improve my golf, because smooth swing is much better than powerful swing. If I can hit the driver smoothly, I can transfer that feeling to the irons, where smoothness is THE most important thing.

I think the driver is a bit fade oriented. I keep hitting a fade shot, even when I feel like I hit a clean shot. But not too much... just a slow fade... moves the ball about 5 yards from left to right.

I like fade shots anyway... I've never been able to hit a good draw... So I guess it works out fine...

Anyway, I need some time to adjust my swing to the new driver...

Earlsy, I have read the physics of a golf ball, I know why it has dimples and why it is made of wrapped rubber cord rather than solid rubber. I understand the transfer of energy from a club to a ball and how it differs from metal and wood.
What really intrigues me is those adjustment screws. I cannot see how they can make any difference. Is it psychological or real, it would seem easy to test.

Ian, I would have agreed with you only a year ago.

I started playing golf 9 yrs ago. I bought cheap clubs - a whole set including bag for 9,000 baht. It just so happens that they were based on an old Ping design (they were not fakes as they had no Ping logo or trademark). Then last year, I had a bit of money and thought of treating myself. As I had been happy with my "Pings", I investigated that brand further and discovered that they are good at fitting clubs to a players physique and swing and they have good "game improvement" clubs (my game needed improvement!!).

Anyway I was fitted and bought a set of Ping Rapture clubs and they had an immediate effect on my game. I hit the ball 20% further on good shots, but the important thing was that bad shots are barely punished! - they feel a bit heavy or clunky, but the ball still goes up in the air and goes nearer the whole. My scores have improved drastically and I am now definitely a "mid-handicapper" rather than a "high-handicapper"

I am now a Ping fan!

Nice looking driver, but I prefer Ping clubs.

Can you adjust those screws for fades and draws?

3,500 is cheap. I paid a lot more than that for my latest acquisition - a Ping Rapture 3 wood.
