Politics of Osho: The Rubbishest Government

A weird Blog appeared yesterday: "Politics of Osho: The Best Government". It so impressed me with its consistent idiocy, false statements and fantasy based drivel that I posted a couple of quick comments. An hour or so later, the comments had all been hidden!  I can appreciate that the poster did not like my comments, but it's only a cut and paste job, so there is no need to feel much sympa....

Necessary Evils of Censorship

First, let me give an example to clarify the terms truth, belief and knowledge: Bill Gates has 62,345,000,321 dollars. This is the truth; it's the way the world is. I believe he has 72,233,000,333 dollars. This is not knowledge because it does not accurately reflect the way the world is; it's a false belief. John believes Bill has 62,345,000,321 dollars, which happens to be true; however, John believ....

Thai rulers' low opinion of Thai citizens

Alcohol is banned this Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the election. And then again next week. This move by the Thai government seems to suggest that they feel Thai people are not to be trusted or treated as mature adults able to make responsible decisions for themselves. Thai people under the age of 20 are not permitted in night clubs or pubs. Again, this is presumably because the Thai Government is....

Atheism and Scientists, Good Explanations

This Blog is in response to one of several statements that Ian recently posted (C. 21) at 123456's Blog "My Bible tells me.... " I agreed with some things Ian said there, and disagreed with some. One of the half wrong ones that I felt merited its own Blog is the statement: "Science is often seen as anti-religion because it often offers better understanding and yet many scientists are a....

Are Moral Black and White Possible? Ever?

My thanks to Ian Jr.. I wrote this as a reply to his comments at  "Speaking Well v. Writing Well, and Critical Thinking" , but then decided to post it as a new blog. Can any moral judgement ever be more than an opinion? I hover between two views that don't sit very comfortably together: the evolutionary explanation, which is extremely effective in explaining observed human morality, and the....

Speaking Well v. Writing Well, and Critical Thinking

This post was prompted by comments relating to my style of writing that a couple of people have posted under various unrelated topics. I'm perfectly happy to have others comment, especially when it's clear from the comments, whether positive or negative, that the posters have done me the courtesy of actually reading what I've written. Indeed, I love it when people read what I write and take the time ....

Why not Abortion?

The current debate about condoms reminded me yet again that Thai law does not allow abortion. This is wrong, and the law needs to be changed to bring it into line not only with justice but also sense. Abortion may not be wonderful, but there is nothing wrong (immoral) with it if performed within the first few months of pregnancy, and it is far and away the most practical solution to the problem of un....

The psychology of names - another view
Posted by FelixQui , Reader : 270 , 16:51:04

As I was idly browsing, this article "Does your name define you?" caught my eye and reminded me of Ian's recent post "The psychology of names" on the Thai term farang. Perhaps our names have a greater influence than we might think. Did your name push you toward a particular place or job? It sounds unlikely, but there does appear to be a correlation between the initial letters of y....

Does Thai Buddhism favour a culture of corruption?

Having been away for a few weeks, I seem to have missed some fireworks between Ian and his critics. I have no idea who Lalida is, but the vestigial comments I've read from Ian and others have prompted me to wade into the fray with some ideas about the role of Buddhism in Thai culture. A word of warning: if you think Buddhism as practised in Thailand is an entirely good and wonderful thing and you don....

"Tea money", Thai education, and freedom of choice

The following is part of a comment, slightly revised, that I posted to Piset's Blog post "High School Entrance Selection Method Should Be Applied to Selections of the Members of the Parliament! It Might Work Better."  I've taken up his suggestion to make it a new Blog post of my own. ____________________ Perhaps a better solution to the persistent "tea money" problem in the Thai e....
