True or False?People should drink at least eight glasses of water a day We use only 10% of our brains Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight They're all false or unproved. And tea and coffee are fine for hydration. For details, and more medical myths, see "Medical myths" in the British Medical Journal, at: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/short/335/7633/1288 What I found most interesting, a....

Suggestion to Admin: Disallow hiding comments.

This is a boring and trivial post. It is just to let me vent my feelings and make a personal attack on the cowardly thief who goes by the name of "Jerrie". Jerrie is a thief. He copies and pastes other people's ideas into his posts. Some are half sensible, like his latest, others are perfectly idiotic (the Osho bilge). He never acknowledges his stealing. Is he also idiotic enough to think t....

YouTube & Her Majesty: An interesting contrast

I don't for a minute think that Thailand's Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has any regrets about the lengthy ban on YouTube this year, when a vast amount of valuable information on science, history, current affairs and other areas was put off bounds to Thai citizens, along with a great source of entertainment. However, not all, not even all royalty, are so strongly opposed to inf....

Radical Suggestions for a Thai Constitution

Pomjuk's comments on Naive's Blog, 'Torn between two wrong guys ; or should i vote for "No one"? ' prompted me to try to organize a few related ideas that I've had. I've often thought that it would be constructive were Thailand to incorporate some of the general principles of the US Constitution in its own. One thing that seems to me especially strong in the US system is that, as much as po....

Does the Nation now think it was wrong?

I enjoyed Pravit Rojanaphruk's opinion piece "Democracy's 'defenders' entrench Army power"  in today's Nation, but it left me with a hitherto unanswered question. Does the Nation now think that its support of the coup last September at the cost of ditching democracy was a mistake? Any comment? ....

So hard not to steal

Has anyone tried buying legal copies of Adobe products in Thailand? I don't like theft, and would prefer to pay the creator for something that  is of value to me, but Adobe sure don't make it easy. A walk around Pantip showed that it would be easy, and way cheap, to simply steal the programs I want. It took a lot of effort (emails and phone calls) to find out how to buy legal copies of the products i....

Politics of Osho: The Rubbishest Government

A weird Blog appeared yesterday: "Politics of Osho: The Best Government". It so impressed me with its consistent idiocy, false statements and fantasy based drivel that I posted a couple of quick comments. An hour or so later, the comments had all been hidden!  I can appreciate that the poster did not like my comments, but it's only a cut and paste job, so there is no need to feel much sympa....

Necessary Evils of Censorship

First, let me give an example to clarify the terms truth, belief and knowledge: Bill Gates has 62,345,000,321 dollars. This is the truth; it's the way the world is. I believe he has 72,233,000,333 dollars. This is not knowledge because it does not accurately reflect the way the world is; it's a false belief. John believes Bill has 62,345,000,321 dollars, which happens to be true; however, John believ....

Thai rulers' low opinion of Thai citizens

Alcohol is banned this Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the election. And then again next week. This move by the Thai government seems to suggest that they feel Thai people are not to be trusted or treated as mature adults able to make responsible decisions for themselves. Thai people under the age of 20 are not permitted in night clubs or pubs. Again, this is presumably because the Thai Government is....

Atheism and Scientists, Good Explanations

This Blog is in response to one of several statements that Ian recently posted (C. 21) at 123456's Blog "My Bible tells me.... " I agreed with some things Ian said there, and disagreed with some. One of the half wrong ones that I felt merited its own Blog is the statement: "Science is often seen as anti-religion because it often offers better understanding and yet many scientists are a....
