Pravit Rojanaphruk's report in today's Nation on Abhisit's policy statement is a very disturbing portent for the coming year. Speaking of the protestors outside, "Abhisit said he 'understood' their feelings but insisted his government was legitimately chosen by the parliament." It is interesting that Abhisit did not, falsely, claim that his government was chosen by the Thai people. This sou....

"A return to Thai ownership of the Preah Vihear Temple is not an option, new Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said yesterday" (The Nation, Dec. 26) An interesting about face here, accompanied, of course, by one of those firm denials that have already become the hallmark of Mr. Abhisit's new government: "Kasit said his previously provocative stance in the PAD over the Preah Vihear conflic....

On what criteria are some people's votes to count for a lot more than others? By intelligence?  The fact is that rural people are as intelligent as city people. IQ varies very little  between provinces or between city and country.....

The Puyai System is Disastrously Bad for Thailand

Some, including the Nation in a particularly weak editorial, have recently suggested that Thailand does not need democracy because it has an excellent and functioning puyai system. There is certainly a connection between democracy in Thailand and the traditional puyai system, and unhappily, it's supporters are right when they observe that the puyai system is an alternative to democracy in Thailand. I....
