Water on the Brain: it's all in the mind

True or False?

  1. People should drink at least eight glasses of water a day
  2. We use only 10% of our brains
  3. Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight

They're all false or unproved. And tea and coffee are fine for hydration.

For details, and more medical myths, see "Medical myths" in the British Medical Journal, at: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/short/335/7633/1288

What I found most interesting, apart from having two (out of seven) false beliefs corrected, was that even doctors regularly fall for some of these myths.

manpower,
i wasn't making an assumption in comment 2. It's what the medical research literature reports.
The British Medical Journal is a reliable peer reviewed source, as are the studies the report is based on.
If you've read the report I referenced, why did you think I was making an assumption? The false belief about diuretics is common, as is the false idea that we should drink 8 glasses of water a day, but being common does not make the beliefs true.

The best solution to 'Water on the Brain' is a tap on the head !

I won't argue on that #3 but I was always told not to read anything under dimm lights even by the eye doctor which they say "It's bad for your eyes" and some I read in articles.

Felix, it strains the muscles not the actual optics. However the muscles become weaker as you get older so become strained/fatigued quicker.

#3 was also one of the ones I got wrong. My own experience is that reading in dim light is a strain on my already poor eyes, but apparently that's just a temporary effect and is unlikely to cause any lasting ruination.

1. I don't know, I drink coke, 2. I've heard once on UBC no comment, but I'm think I'm using more then 10% to deal with my old man's sharp tongue and some of them in here 3. I agree, definitely right.

ITY, just remember that is you take sugar with your coffee and you drink a lot of coffee, you will be taking onboard too much refined sugar. Particularly as most Thai food, which you seem to enjoy, is already high in sugar.

Thanks Felix,

I can finally put to bed my long held guilt complex about the number of cups of coffee I drink each day! Believe me, that is a huge weight (of water) off my mind. Off to Starbucks now for my first cup of the day.

Funnily enough the BBC website featured the same article a few days ago.
I once walked through my local town on stilts (fund raising), main wisecracks I got was, "is it windy up there mate?" and "good view up there?".

Another popular article in the current BMJ is "Sex, aggression, and humour: responses to unicycling", where the researcher reports an unusual confirmation in evolutionary psychology. It's at: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/335/7633/1320

manpower,
Yes, tea and coffee are diuretics, but if the body is in need of water, their diuretic effect results in less water being lost than is taken in, so they can both provide a nett gain. The believe that they must cause a nett water loss is false.
