With protests quashed and many monasteries empty, fears are growing for those who have disappeared into Burma's grim prisons in recent days - rights groups say more than 1,000 people, including monks and students, are missing.

"I hate to think where they might be, but we have gone by a number of monasteries and they are empty. And it is frightening to think why that is," US charge d'affaires in Rangoon, Shari Villarosa told Nation Channel's Suthichai Yoon in a telephone interview Monday.

Zaw, my attitude is quite simply that her role is not to sit passively and let information trickle in but to actively go out and seek facts, with notepad and camera and video recorder.
The military may shoot a Japanese news reporter, hopefully they would think twice before doing the same to an official representative of the US government.
I think a man just might be more proactive in her job.

Ian,
I can totally understand Ms Shari's comments when she said "we dont know anything" .Yes...because she is in Burma. you will not know exact information and what is really going on there even if you are physically there and seeing things yourselves as a well connected Burmese.. there are rumours everywhere with mixed facts. there are secret everywhere. With her position as US charge daffaires of Burma and under the current situation, she is answering sincerely and just telling the facts without any diplomatic implication and bias.
I thanks her for that.

Basically Madame Shari's comments can be summed up in one phrase, "We don't know anything".
Why is she actually there? A soft job has suddenly become a hot potato and I don't think she is up to it.
